Under my landy
Fitted my overdrive today, not too bad a job really, took a bit longer than it probably should, but, all on and working well, however, whilst poking around i have found some serious structural failings in my chassis, my original plan was to keep it going to next winter then galv it, but, it's not going to last that long and it is already so heavily patched up it would be stupid to patch it more, it just needs replacing.

So, i'm thinking new chassis (Richards' most likely) and if i can remember who does them a new galv. bulkhead too.

It'll leave me with a very battered, rough looking series, with pristine chassis and bulkhead!!!

Unfortunate. I think I saw a galv bulkhead on fleabay recently, might be worth a look.

Bump.......... You ever get any feed back on those 2 miss ID series at the B&W show??????????? The orange and purple ones?

I
I know how you mean about fitting the overdrive, it was a PITA for me to do and the gearbox was out to do it! Good luck with rebuilding it :)

Is it really worth throwing £3 grand at a series for a chassis and bulkhead ? Thats what you will be looking at even if the job goes well. I think I would move mine on and look for another one that someone has put a chassis on and then tidy up all the other bodges.

But thats no fun. If you do it you know you'll have a mint series with no bodge ups that'll outlast you. Ideal if you want to keep it. My series will get galved eventually when the current chassis runs out in 20 odd years

look at what the added value would be compared to a rusted out one. You would defo get your money back and it is a strong selling point

I agree in doing the chassis swap that the only answer but you will NEVER get your money back. Never!

Series prices are on average appreciating. A solid and fairly original would fair well value wise i would have thought.
Aside from prices, even if you were to scrap yours and buy another, what would you get for £3k? ...... Probably a series 3 on a galv chassis and decent bulkhead!
I went down the galv chassis and galv bulkhead route and its reassuring to have a 'vehicle for life' regardless of how my circumstances could change. Perhaps i'm biased :)

Just look at the prices people ask in the Land Rover mags for series with galv chassis. They dont even get their money back if they have paid to have the chassis changed. I keep getting tempted to go look at one and maybe move my series on one day.

I thought i was doing something wrong trying to get it in, but, obviously not, it is just a pain! Least it is in and working, even if the rest of the landy is failing!

Excellent thank you

Have seen others on ebay (generally around about £700)
Excellent thank you, saves me googling!

I thought about this, i could go out and buy a 200tdi 90 for £2k, however, it'll have all the same issues over time that mine does. My series body is bashed around lots, but, if I got something which was really tidy i wouldn't ever want to lane or off-road it.

It's not for sale - i'm not doing it to make money - I go to work to do that - my series is my toy, i've got some very fond memories of days out with it, and i'm sure I'll have more to come,

I'm sure next year the g/b will fail, and maybe an axle after that, it's a landy, I'm not trying to make it amazing shiny and bomb proof, just want to keep it running for ever so i can enjoy laning in it :)

buy a disco.......

I happen to have one for sale :D

Galv it you know you want to

why are you selling? I've had D1's in the past - good motors - but prefer my D3 :D:D

No... the owners know they are illegal, all we can do is hope the police will eventually catch up with them and crush them.

Galvy chassis is THE way forward ...BUT don't do it if it is for commercial reasons .

IF you intend keeping your series then the addition of a galvy chassis (and possibly bulkhead/front panel/copper brake lines AND a new loom ) should give you many years of peace of mind .
Keep the fitting of **** that comes in blue boxes to an absolute minimum and nowt safety critical ...and you'll be laughing .

Possible to re-chassis a series in a weekend with some preparation and kit and a couple or so folks that know what they are doing .
We did my mates over a weekend (Not starting each day till 11 ish )

I have heard a lot of bad reports about ashtree in terms of quality, afaik they are not in andover, are you thinking of andover landrover?

Andover Land Rover International - Land Rover Bulkheads & Restorations

I was looking at them when I replaced my bulkhead. luckily I found a good pre-owned one down the road for £100 or so, non galved though.

I think the price of the andover ones is ok if you plan on doing the painting and replacement yourself, the cost escalates massively if you want him to paint it and install it.

I can only speak from experience, and say that the bulkhead that they did for me was absolutely brilliant, and also the galvenised framed doors... yes if you look really closely you can just about see where they refurbished the old bulkhead before galvanising it, but I actually prefer the fact that it is not a brand new bulkhead... with regards to location, when I last went there they were located in a tiny little place called Anna Valley in Hampshire, which is about 2 miles from the centre of Andover.

Take a look and if you like what they do then buy... if not then don't. I know that they are at most of the Landy Shows these days and I have found the guy who runs it (Lyn Swann) a thoroughly decent chap to deal with
