My td5 defender is squeaking like mad I changed the fan belt and it fixed it for a few days, the squeak returned so thinking that now the belt had slackened off it may allow play on the bearings in the pulleys and the tensioner. I have stripped them all off and checked the bearings only to find there all ok. So now I am back to square one haha. Anyone found a solution ?

is it definetly from the belt, sprinkle some talc on the belt, if it stops squeeking you then defo know its from them, then you can investigate how to stop it,
I found the crank pulley and damper can squeek when its nearing the end of its life

I will check that out thanks John. And yes it is an auto tensioner :) looks like I am off to the shop for some talc if it don't work at least my engine will smell nice haha

New tensioner waiting for the weekend when I can do the new radiator too........ Screeching all the time, combination of coolant from the holed radiator, (automatic!) tensioner nadged, and the fan pulley surface looks like it needs a darned good clean up too (white/oxidised/coolant again patches on the driving surface). And a new belt of course. If that doesn't fix it nothing will!!! Hope yours turns out to be that simple too.... A :)

Thanks agew. Good luck with yours.
Was thinking about the water pump, the temps are all ok so wasn't sure might be worth swapping. I was wanting to start with the simple things and hope I find the problem without to much pain

When I had the tensioner off I checked the bearing but could it be the springs inside and how would I know if they are shot?

How tense are the belts when its all fitted back together? If there is a lot of play then your springs probably aren't doing their job?
