Evenin' all,

I am trying to do my bit and add pages to the local 4x4 clubs website,
but it will only take maximum of 500Kb pictures, (mine are anything up
to 900KB) is it possible to reduce the resolution of the pictures to
under this limit so I can get the bloody things on the website?

On Windows? If it's XP there is a Microsoft powertoy that will do
this easily enough. For a website you want them well under 500kb
really - I'd aim for 50kb for thumbnail with a click-through to teh
full size thing if someone needs it.

Better still is to use something like Gimp which will give you much
more control, but the powertoy will probably do exactly what you need.

Yes, please resize them!. I'd go for 50-100kb for a standard photo on
a web page (go a bit bigger if you want to give them a higher res
version too)

The microsoft image resizer is very simple and easy to use and is free
for windows XP.

the 'small' preset is good for web pages.

If you want anything more complicated there is a free bit of image
editing software called irfanview (here - http://www.irfanview.com/)

 
Hi guys, this still isn't working for me. I've got the extra "resize
pictures" bit when I right click but when i click on that and right
click to properties it says that the picture is still 500+KB or
whatever? What am I missing....................

oh, and i don't get an extra "copy" of the picture labelled (small) in
the same folder either. Help. Arrrrrrrrrrrrrghhhhhhh

You are clicking the 'OK' button after choosing 'small' arnt you?

are the pictures on the harddisk or your pc, not on a CD or still on
the camera, copy them onto your computer first if you arnt already

If you are and it still isnt working try restarting your computer and
trying it again.

I used Picasa2 free to download, gives you the option to resize on export
and I'm sure tells you the size before you save. I resize all my Landrover
images this way.

It also seeks out all the images on your hard drive for you... found some
I'd lost amoungst the folders!

I use the Microsoft Photo Editor and save at jpgs with 60 quality factor
(100 is "full" quality.) Use the "More" tab when saving to get the
option up.

That normally reduces a 500kB file to around 70kB with no real loss of
definition (when seen on a monitor anyway).

Personally I can't fault The GIMP (GNU Image Manipulation Program) with
the "David's Batch Processor" plugin :-

It allows you to bulk process a whole dir of images and automatically
rotate, blur, adjust colours, resize, crop, sharpen and rename them.
You would just specify a pixel resolution for the new images and let it
do it's work.

It isn't just "resize" you need. You also need to save it at a lower
quality.

Do a "save as" and have a look at the options. For jpegs there is
normally a "quality" control between 100 and 0.

I use around 60, which is fine for displayed pictures.

I have tried this a variety of ways but when I get "save as " it just
asks me what I want to save them as not quailty, there is no options
box

any idea where I could get this from Lee, I've tried everything else
and am quick running out of patience, back to chalk and slate for me I
think

It depends a bit on the software you're using, but some image file
formats have quality options, and some don't. There's three programs I
regularly use which need you to select the JPEG format before the
Options/Quality adjustment appears.

Be careful about filenames, so you don't overwrite the original.
