Opinions on this IIA

A colleague of mine has been wanting to get a Series IIA Land Rover for a while now and this one has come up. I know nothing about them so wanted some opinions. Apparently there is not much, if any, paperwork apart from its most recent MOT.

Looks like a paint and polish job, almost impossible to say much about rust, as they haven't provided any underside pics.
Might be worth a personal inspection if it isn't far away. I certainly wouldn't be tempted at that price without giving it a thorough look over and test drive.
No docs?? Do be careful it. or parts thereof, aren't nicked.

looks good but then it is nicely painted, as its up to £5k already and reserve not met, I would want to have a close look at the chassis and bulkhead with maybe a test drive before shelling out. lack of history might not be unusual, if it has had a long ownership and the guy did the work himself.

The Landy is in Lands End and the guy is near London so its a bit of a trip. Apparently he will sell it now for £7k.

The chassis has been "patched and painted" so not sure of the true condition.

I would never buy a running vehicle without a test drive. Best way to assess condition of the mechanicals. And why would any seller not want you to drive, unless they had something to hide?
Non runner might be different, but I would only expect to be paying a few hundred quid.

I just had a word with him. This one might be a bit too risky considering he hasn't looked at any others yet to compare. Thanks for the offer though!

No worries. Only about ten miles from here. I probably know either the vehicle or the seller. West Cornwall is like living on an island.

absolutely agree if a seller is iffy about a test drive I would give it whatever he is selling a wide berth.

if the chassis has been repaired, I would expect to see photos of the patches without asking if he is expecting £7k

from what you can see of the front cross member the surface of the chassis is quite rough, they may just have blacked over the surface rust in which case it would bubble through in next to no time.

if your mate is in London, plenty of landies come up in and around there for much less than £7k

It looks too painted n glossy. Makes me suspicious of rather full price. Specially on ebay. At that price you should see it in the flesh. It would have to be mint at that price to tempt me.

I wasn't even thinking about buying it! Just said I would go round and check it out if he wanted, cos I only live a few miles from there!
As it happens, I would like one of those, but would be after something a bit better than that one.

never thought you were, just agreeing with what you said about the test drive, the rest of my message was more directed towards the op :D
