one for the experts

righty boys, i have aquired a 4.0 block, no evidence of any issues with it but i'm rebuilding it. i wont be messing with crank and pistons as they are in good condition and also the cam is too.

i will be putting on new big end bearings but what else do i need to renew and what else can i use from my other engine. the heads will be skimmed and used as these have been tesred and i'm renewing the crank seals.

if we can start a list and add to it as we go along please, i dont want to miss anything and i dont want to spend the earth on it!

i'll start us off, cheers fellas!

big end bearings

working from the bottom up

big end bearings
main bearings
clean and check oil pump
clean front cover
clean oil pick up tube and new o ring
clean out sump,new gasket
new front cover oil seal and rear crank oil seal
new timing gear
new camshaft
new oil pressure switch
new oil pressure relief valve
head gasket and heads,new cylinder head bolts
new tappets
new rockers and pushrods
new valley gasket and end seals
think that might be it gav,im sure someone will find something ive missed

...**** sake just pay some dude to do it,ya mad

don't forget to plastigage all the bearings to make sure they are all within tollerance, check the ring gap clearence's and bore clearence's to make sure they are all up to scratch

give it to rpi and say "i want lots of power!!" then hand them the deeds to your house and family and sit back and wait

Really? I have been building race engine for years now and although I have not built a Rover V8 I have never heard of anything like this, the tangs hold the bearings in place and they are clamped in place once torqued up?

i think he means thread lock the bearing cap bolts (or is it studs on the v8?)

loctite the bearing shells before clamping true as this stops float and helps them last longer.

i have a fella working on it who cut his teeth on the old rover engines but i wanted to know exactly what i should be buying and dumping in his lap. to keep costs down i will be cleaning the whole thing myself, he will strip it down and then i will be cleaning once again! then he will build the bottom end and i will assble it all into a shiney new(ish) engine for my rangey.

also i will be fitting it myself. would it be best fitted as a short engine and build the heads in situ(which i have done several fecking times) or build the lot and put in car, also i gotta strip the bleedin front outa the car!

if it were me gav,if you have a hoist put it in as a whole engine,if you don,t put it in as a short lump approx weight of a built up v8 is roughly 250kgs

i dont have a hoist and the yard i usually use is a bit far to be travelling each day after work to just do an hour or so, i was gonna lift it in but i dont think i can lift a quater ton on my own. might hire a hoist for the refit!

i'm getting all excited now!

if you hire a hoist gav,build the engine complete,that way everything will be torqued up,and you can easily spot anything missing.

missing, dont tell me that, i'll be awake all night, ive already gone round and round the engine in my mind trying to sort stuff!

i'm confident kev, i just dont want to screw up and end up with more work than when i started! i assume i can do it all and most of the important stuff is gonna be done by a fella who stripped engines in his sleep so i do have a lot of support!

just wish i had a majic wand to wave at the bloody thing!

i have cleaned the block, mostly and am contemplating taking the thing into the house to finnish off cleaning. do you think i will end up divorced or homeless or both????

All it is is a few bits and some nuts and bolts.Follow the rules and if you are doing the heads make yourself a board with holes in to pop in ya valves in order,
Parting that its a logical mechanical application that only requires logic.
