I am looking at going to morocco next year with a couple of other vehicles. As such I want to be able to air down my tyres for off road driving and then re-inflate them easily and quickly for getting back onto tarmac.
I have a discovery 200tdi fitted so am looking at a set up using aircon pump from a discovery similar to this thread. In this thread the picture looks like the airline comes direct from the pump rather than having an airtank. This would make the install much simpler and cheaper. Has anyone else done this without using an air tank, is it possible?

I understand the basic set up of: inline oiler, compressor, inline filter, but in this set up there does not seem to be a pressure relief valve or similar which I though was a fairly essential safety feature.

There are some very good write ups of how to install onboard air using the aircon pump so I am confident that it will work, but all of these use an airtank which I would like to avoid if possible.

Any information anyone has on this would be great or any pictures of their own set up would also be appreciated.

It's something I reckon I'd install in future, very useful for blowing up camp beds etc, but really think you need a relief valve. Tanks are cheap should you want one, second hand hgv ones.

A relief valve is sensible, but what about an electric pressure valve thats cuts the power supply to the compressor clutch once max pressure reached, either in a tank or just the air line? pretty much like the cheapo diy compressors.

I realise its 24v but am pretty sure it can handle the tiny amount of power needed to operate the clutch.
Hgv tanks come in many sizes some quite small so theres bound to be somewhere you can fit one, they have literally no second hand value whatsoever.

Get a proper air compressor, using an AC compressor that needs lubing and blowing oil into your tyres is Heath Robinson and a bit of a stupid idea.

I used a T-max compressor, took it apart, added a manifold and solenoid and have air for diff locks and tyres readily available between the seats. I use the original compressor on/off switch, the solenoid works from a dash switch for the diff-lock. If / when i get a second diff-lock I'll just add another solenoid and switch. The inflator or airline accessory is always on when the compressor is on, but obviously only works properly when an airline is connected to the quick-connector. Works very well.

In the pic, the red and black wire is to a pressure valve rated between 75 and 105 PSI so the compressor cuts in and out automatically as needed.
The green and black wire is to the solenoid, which turns air to the diff-lock on and off.
The quick connect for the airline is bolted into one port of the manifold, which is the small blue anodised (can hardly be seen) aluminium block under the solenoid. This is bolted directly to the compressor output.
