Why use it to power a compressor - it is a compressor!! and yes, i have heard many years ago, the A/C compressor was converted to charge an air reciever used for tyre filling, and small tools use....A/C clutch was controlled by a pressure switch when the reciever was full.

thats what i meant  want to be able to blow up tyres

The AC compressor compresses gas with oil vapour in the circuit. I doubt it would last long pumping humid air.
Electric is a better option, I carry a small electric compressor at all times for emergencies.

I have converted a range rover classic air con compressor to fill tyres etc..

all you need to do is use a air tool oiler in the air inlet to oil the pump , then on the outlet use a spray gun filter/water trap to remove the oil , as you don't want oil in your tyres ,

works well and fills tyres quick

got any pics of it

Mine has a air line from the air tank and works really well .

Exactly. Utilise what you have, much easier than playing with total bodge ups. Or get one of those little compressors that plug into the ciggy lighter. You could have a couple, they are not expensive.

will put a pic up later ,

its only worth doing if you use compressed air a lot , worked really well , would blow tyres up as quick as my proper garage compressor, way better than even expensive 12v air compressors

most of the ones ive bought havent lasted very long either burnt out or broke when fell out of boot thats why i thought of a inboard one
I have three 12 volt compressors, the oldest I've had for 20 years and still works fine. The one I carry in the P38 resides in the spare wheel centre, no chance of it falling out.

Jeff,

What happens to the oil in the compressor, I don't have any experience with auto ac, but if its any thing like a normal refrigeration circuit it wouldn't last two minutes due to ack of oil, or are you saying that you put oil in every time you use it?

What type of oil is in the comp?

I used a air line oiler , it just puts a fine oil mist into the pump, you don't need to put oil in every time , the small oiler only needed topping up every 2 hours of use or so,
