I have just had MOT and only failed on front wheel bearings so very pleased.
I now have all the bits and re test booked for Wed pm so need to get in done tonight.
My question is regarding the oil seal which way should it face with the lip inwards to the centre of the axle.vechile or outwards towards the wheel bearings.

I took of both front wheels and both were on different.
Your help is gratly appreciated.
The book is not clear.

Thanks Tony

hello mate .. ok the oil seal thats fits into the axle tube( this is visibal whan the swivel is off ) lip faces outward ie the face of the seal (smooth side ) faces outward toward the svivel , the oil seal thats sits in the back of the hub sits facing outward in other words the axle seal and the inner hub seal should be facing eachother with thier smooth faces, and the outer hub seal ie the first seal you come to after taking the hub nut off should be facing you with smooth side out hope this helps

Dear Landybloke
Thanks for the reply just to confirm.
Should the seal on the left have the flat side facing the road wheel or have the lip facing the road wheel.
I have attached a drawing.
Thanks for the help much appreciated.

hello mate cant open file for your drawing but if you was standing at the back of the landy rear nearside a cross section of the hub and axle will be as follows, hub outer seal has 2 lips on it an internal one ( large) and an external one (small) the small lip looks out of the hub towards the kerb and should be drifted into the hub outer, the inner seal has smooth face facing axle but should be drifted in about 4-5 mm lower than the rim of the inner( this stops the shoulders of the stub axle wearing it away) and axle seal has smooth face facing hub ie away from the axle tube

put it this way matey ..each seal has a solid side and a hollow side "smooth face " means solid side so cross section of hub will be from left to right will be. solid out , solid in , solid out

Thanks for the info I have it right in my head now.
Sorry for being dim.
I will put it all back together tonight ready for the re test.
So by the weekend Road Tax and I will be touring the Brecon Becons.

Thanks Tony
