Ive just found a small hose connector on my 2 1/4 series 3 that runs to an oil press gage in the dash, where does it go to on engine , is this a standard part or an add on???

Sticks out of the front of on my old engine so yes.
If the guage is a mechanical type with a flexi tube then often its just a 't' piece behing the oil pressure switch where the supply comes from.
Electric sender type ones are better, little risk of oil weeing out everywhere if the pipe gets trapped.

yeh ,its a mechanical one, only just got the landy so all a bit new to me at the moment, i think its had many switched and stuff over the years added and removed so not sure whats what. So ill be off to find a T piece later .

any idea what the reading should be for start up when cold , and when warm??? i hear people saying to use a heavier grade oil, is this just a personal thing or recomended?

cheers

Diffo engines have diffo pressures, I'd be looking at idle around 20psi when warm, maybe double when cold depending how good th'oil is.

Remember, the oil PRESSURE isn't what matters.

The vital thing is oil FLOW.

You can have lots of pressure and damn-all flow, and a seized engine. And you can have hardly any pressure but a good oil FLOW. As long as enough oil is flowing to the right places, all should be well.

Change the oil and the oil filter on schedule more or less, and you won't go far wrong till there's a big problem.

Low oil pressure all the time usually just suggests an old tired engine. Oil pressure which SUDDENLY drops is much more serious. STOP!

yeh got that all to do, going to flush engine out , and change all oill, filters, leads, plugs, points, belt and thermo.gota get a new carb also, its fitted with a weber 34 that has seen better days.
Got it up on jacks checking the chassis and a bit of welding first.

i think im gona enjoy this.

Yep oil flow is important, however if the pressure is below that of the relief valve, then you know that the flow is equal to or greater than that of the pump which is a good indication (so long as the pump int knacked), I spose what Charles is saying is that if the pressure is high all the time then there could be summat wrong like a blockage.
