Check my oil this evening after nticing a rhythmic tapping from the top end of my engine and found the oil level was so low it just registered on the dip stick.

I have done the obvious checks.

No oil in the coolant.
No white mush on the oil filler cap
looking down the sides and front of the engine everything looks dry.
Under side of engine and gearbox is clean with no signs of oil.
No evidence of oil leaking round the oil filter
I can't see any blue smoke from the exhaust, although there is a bit of white smoke, which does not smell of oil.

Last oil change was about 1000 miles ago, I put 10w40 in.

Cna't think where the oil has gone, any suggestions?

well it must have gone somewhere how often do you check your oil ?
i check mine every week
over a period of time the engine will burn oil that you may not see or smell :)

It will have burnt it, all engines use oil to a greater or lesser degree. Shame on you, you have not checked it in a thousand miles. Sure way of knackering a engine that.

Thanks for the replies, 2 litres of oil in 1000 miles seems an awful lot to me.

I shall assume for now I don't have a serious problem, but need 22 gallons of petrol and a litre of oil every time I fill up:doh:

My brand new BMW 323i used to use 5 litres of oil going to Birmingham and back say 400 miles, BMW reckoned that was OK. Heap of ****

Try keeping the revs down for a week or two, stay below 2500 / 3000 and see it use less oil:)
