The inner hub seal. It's leaking out of the Diff and down the axle casing and out via the halfshaft. Have yu got an Haynes book of lies or access to Rave. Both show how to replace it.

first off check axle breather ,seal depends on age of vehicle ,300 tdi have seal in stub axle ftc5268 ,and earlier seal on outer side of hub frc8222, seals can be effected by play in wheel bearing

Try takeing the wadeing breather apart on top of the axle, usually full of crud, mine was, If it is bunged up the axle cannot breathe. ie pressure builds up and blows the hub seal. good luck.
