Oil grade?

Because of the design age of the LR V8 engine. Buy one of todays multi valve or V8s and above the only oil to use is fully synthetic with their extended oil changes.

WHY?

What good is there in extended oil changes?
(apart from it saves the main stealer doing the job)

They say run the oil twice as long - they charge you four times as much.

Its all a load of crap, they use it as a selling device - "you save money when you buy a new xxxxx car because of the extended service periods", i think VW is currently plugging that BS on the radio for their vans.

The I/C engine has not really altered in many years, just more technology is bolted on to squeeze more out of the fuel used, at the end of the day its still got pistons and a crank just as the first one ever built.

Extended drains are the OEMs doing their bit to help save the planet ;) less oil changes means less oil used, it also means less dirty oil to get rid of. Also if you do high miles it means you car isnt in the dealers every other month getting a service :)

If you are looking at 2 similar cars, one has a 6000 mile service interval and the other a 15000 mile service interval then the latter looks a more attractive option.

Extended oil change intervals are there to save the customer money and reduce the amount of waste oil being produced, also when using used oil analysis on modern synthetic oil it's found to be absolutely pointless to change it every 5000 miles. In some UOA's they have shown the wear to decrease after 5000 miles!

It doesn't matter if the oil is 4 time the cost of mineral oil it is still cheaper than having a service so if it lasts twice as long it still saves you money in the long run.

On the other forum I frequent a large amount of owners are obsessed with changing their oil every 3000 miles as they believe it will blow up if they dont. As a test i did 13000 miles in my own car using a fully synthetic 5w40 Castrol oil and then analysed a sample, Wear was virtually zero and the addative pack was still as new :D On a tip top engine you could seriously do 20000 miles on a good quality oil easily, in fact its the filter thats generally the limiting factor :)

Although some manufacturers say 20,000 miles between oil changes they also say 1 YEAR which ever accures first, i believe this is because town work kills oil very quickly

The best oil to use is tractor universal, because you only need to change it after ploughing in the spring.

I aint cooking me chips in ep80:mad::mad:

Sirus,

For goodness sake don't use EP 80 to fry chips in.

You should know to use AGRICULTURAL oil for doing chips in, such as tractor universal ... there's a special 80 grade known as POT 80 Oil (not EP80) for chippies.

It changes between manufacturer but you are right they tend to have an arduous use service plans as well as their variable regimes

VAG are 2 year variable, not sure about BMW or MB i know they are on variable service regimes but not sure if time is limited to one or two years. Peugeot citroen and renault are on two year 20000 mile service plans i think.

Anyone who knows anything about oil will say the number one most important thing is to get the application right.

Ahhh.... sit down my boy, it's time we had a little chat about something ....

You see, it's all aboutcrap ... the crap experts come out with about oil ....

Like saying universal tractor oil is the best oil regardless of application.

Universal tractor oils excel in no particular area, they are just satisfactory and allow farmers to rationalize the amount of different oils they have to keep. It will never be better than a dedicated hydraulic oil, gearbox oil or engine oil.

Anyone who knows anything about oil will tell you the number one most important thing is to get the application right and second to that is the quality of the oil in question. The Universal tractor oil that you use isn't even ovoline's (which is a Fuchs second brand) top of the range universal oil so it's wrong to suggest this oil as the best for everything.

When the engine oil is changed, it gets strained and tipped right into the FUEL tank! Waste not, want not. Oil is oil. You can do this with your Landy LEGALLY, and the blackness disguises any other colours that might be in the tank, such as red.
