Hopefully the latter, but I ain't-so-sure!!
Just taken the disco for it's second cheeky drive since doing a recon head job.
When I got back yesterday (cheeky spin number1) I noticed that the water had dropped in header tank and had lost it's nice new coolant blue look.
Don't panic I thought, it's the first time the engines had a chance to heat up maybe it's bled air out the system and the colour could be due to over a year of dry engine/rust contaminating the coolant.

So, got back from it's second drive today, bit of a 10min beasting, and noticed no drop in water level or oil/exhaust smell from the water BUT a quiet hissing sound coming from the cap.
The temp guage has never gone over half way and leccy fan seems to be kicking in okay. Have also removed the viscous fan and the top to the radiator cowl (plastic strip thing) as the clip has broke.

Just run the engine for a minute with cap off and no bubbling or noticable exhaust fumes just a bit of steam.
Sticking my head under the bonnet as soon as the engines cut off (I got long arms I av) and I can hear about 2secs of water circulating somewhere.

I may be over analysing but as I understand you should never have enough pressure build up in the water system for expansion cap to hiss.
Could it be faulty? Or do things point to still head gasket failure (pls note I did everything by the book, no corner cutting).
Oh, one thing I haven't changed is the thermostat.
Am about to go check for trapped air in top of rad but not holding me breath.

Please someone give me peace of mind and say it will aall be okay!!!
:(

There could still be some air in the system so i wouldn't panic too much yet,When you say the viscous fan has been removed i'm assuming you've fitted a replacement electric fan insted?

Hi Graham, start taking your calming pills mate - it'll be alright but I reckon you have a bit of trapped air still in the system, use the plug on the top of the thermostat housing to bleed/top up the system.

Before you put the new head on did you if it was second hand have it pressure tested and skimmed? if yes then you shouldnt have anything to worry about

..that's what I like a bit of reassurance!
I squeezed a bit more water in the top of the rad which took some time, will take the stat housing off tomorrow and try to get some in there.
Ticking the engine over fir 10mins, no driving and there was no noise from the filler cap so fingers crossed.

I used the same head but yes it was skimmed and pressure tested :)

regarding the viscous fan I took it off for access and never stuck it on due to the general consensus on here, although it has a couple of leccy fans which look pretty OE - it's a 300ES?..

Thanks for the positive input anyways :D :D

change the bleed plugs for domestic radiator bleed valves and you can let the air out while it is hot and pressurised.

Never thought of that, have already switched to a copper one as the plastic one was fubar'd. Will crack it open a couple of turns with engine running :)

The lecky fans will be for your air conditioning.

Oo I don't know, just used some generic blue stuff from carplan.
Does it matter???
Thanks

No Graham, it doesn't matter so long as it is replaced every 2 years and the system is fully rinsed through to remove all the old stuff.

The pink stuff is OAT and is the recommended coolant for TD5's but I believe is just a longer-acting better quality coolant.

Thats what i was thinking too,I'd re fit the viscous fan or get an electric version fitted as you won't be doing your motor any favours in this hot weather.

Noted, thanks. Especially as I got a ferry on hold for august - the plan being to drive from Santander into France and up the coast so the engine could get pretty hot hot!!
I just hope i don't get bad news tomorrow as I got it booked in for it's first mot in 4 years...
