had the gearbox back of today as the brand new release bearing that went in last week flew in bits! (was a faulty item and has been replaced with a fresh one) any way. when putting box back on i got in a temper as it wouldnt go on and eventually it shot on but knocked a samll section of the bell housing off :(
upto top right its now missing a piece and 2 bolt holes.

ive put it all back and it works but im now worried this could cause probs.
what u all think?

In my job as a machanic I've come accross some strange things over the last thirty seven years, and gearbox's with missing bolts are a regular "find" Some have been like that for thousands of miles with no problems, so I wouldn't worry too much about your missing bits.
One thing though, I can never understand why anyone takes the gearbox out of a Landy to do the clutch, it's far easier to pull the engine.

ah but you dont have to take it out, you just move it backwards - i much prefer doing it this way

and moving a GB back is very doable without having to go to the expense of a hoist for the engine hence it's popularity with roadside mechanics

id already had the gearbox out as my other box was funked so i swapped it for a good box last week. and today i did just pull it back didnt bother taking it all the way out.
my worry is i have cracked the bell housing and a lump is missing now only a small bit but still big wnough for water etc to get in. i was thinking i should maybe drill a hole in the bottom of the bell housing to let anything that gets in drain out again, so my clutch doesnt have to work fully submerged in water lol

Yeah I agree with the others on here, Land Rover seem to use the theory of 'Why use 4 bolts, when you can use 5'

I broke a part of a series bell housing off, bout a fifth of it as i remember, i was trying to jack the gearbox in with bolts and the input shaft wasn't lined up on the splines. (I was young and stupid) Anyway, i finally lined it up put all the other bolts in, there was a big old gap where the bit had broke off, so i put some rubber matting over it and glued it with loads of silicone, never had a problem with it!!!

was the vehicle used off road? thats the only bit im worried about is going wading. although i suppose the bellhousing doesnt have a gasket as standard so it wont be water tight.

It was fine, like others have said the clutch needs to breath, there should be some sort of drainage hole in the bell housing anyway!

Obviously you dont want any massive lumps of mud or stones getting in there! So block any huge holes, a bit of rubber mat glued on with slicone!

The bellhousing should be water tight hence the need for the wading plug in deep water. Also where the engine and geabox meet there should be a smear of silicone to seal it up. I have seen this on every 'first time gearbox out' disco I have seen.

Many do not bother when replacing, if you are not wading then forget it, I have seen gearboxes in car with three or four bolts missing and they were fine.

JMHO

Dave
