Update...

just got a copy of Rave working, seems my half-shafts were both on upside down and there is a measurement for disc wear, Rave says 12m min mine measured about 7mm:eek:

Im gonna smooth the scabs on the ball with a wet-stone and refit them i think.

Could someone give advice on this please, need to replace or not????

Thanks

Its not as rough as it looks but definitely pitted, i stoned the sharp edges away but naturally it revealed more crap, am i looking at new balls, swivel bearings etc????

Its halfway up on the front face of the ball, inside the area covered by the seal when straight ahead.

Need to order quick if i do as i want to get her back together at the weekend.

Don't think it's deep enough to do a good repair with liquid metal but too deep to ignore I think, looks like another order coming up.

Parts?
2x DA3166 Teflon ball kits,
2x STC226 top swivel pins for abs,

Anything else?

The price difference between the ball alone and the ball kit is only £3 so worth getting for the extra spare bits I think.

Does that cover it?

id rather use good old bearings and pin than ****ty new ones they may work just keep your eye on them ive used cheap bearings and had a few failures some worked

Ok, I guess I could refit the old ones, they seem ok.

What's the idea of the top pin, I see it has a thrust race to take the preload but the outer bearing seems to be some sort of bushing?

disco and rrc allways had bearing top and bottom ,def before 300 had rialko bush ,for abs vehicles disco rr used earlier def chrome ball and modified bush and pin for sensor

Excellent, thanks for the info and the seemingly endless flow of help:) much appreciated.

I have ordered two ball kits as I figured that will give me the chance of reusing the old good races or if they get muffed up, I have the new pattern ones in reserve.

Also ordered 2 stc226 top pins.

Hopefully that will be the end of this blasted saga!

Still, at least the front end should be sweet for many miles more:)

Takes your chances I guess but paddocks sell the pattern races for £1.75 ea which would put doubts in my mind as to exactly what they are made out of:eek:

The bottom swivel does not rotate much as most bearings do but they take a hammering on every bump of the wheel, I try not to use cheapo parts in stressed locations.

Yeah I understand mate, just thought I'd let you know that mine have actually been fault free and looked good under visual inspection too. Whether they'd last 10 years like an OEM item might I don't know!! :D
