hi after a week of not much use i took the disco
out for a drive all was well for the first few miles
then i went for a gear change and it would not engage.
well after pulling over and faffing about with the xfer in neutral
that if i fully engage the clutch pedal
it refuses to change gear
but if i partly press about half way it works just fine?
same with xfer engaged.

again with the xfer in neutral
when i do a part push and engage a gear all is quiet
but if i then fully press down i get a whirring noise
that fades out as i ease off the pedal

i suspect the thrust bearing but i have never had one fail
in this way they usualy just go pop and leave me
with no clutch at all not one that works fine as long as i don't
press fully.

ideas?

the fact you have a noise when pedals pressed would mean to me the box coming out
yup its just a fault a i have not come across
before and i am looking to narrow the possible
causes i don't "think" its the box making the noise
rather the thrust bearing.

but after a day of replacing the brake callipers and pipes
and fitting new shocks and dislocation bits i don't fancy
diving under it again for a while sigh..

Well bit the bullet and pulled the gearbox today to find
a failure i haven't come across before!

master and slave fine
release bearing fine
cover plate also fine
friction place err oh!

the carrier in the centre that holds the shock springs
in place had one of its three rivets torn out
so it was sitting at 30deg to the plane of the plate
which was the cause of the odd grinding
at full pedal travel as that made it rub on the inside
of the finger springs on the pressure plate never seen this before
i guess it was just a few miles from shattering completely
annoying as the friction material looks like it had thousands
of miles left in it and it was an AP plate if that means anything.

well its all been binned for a shiny new valeo kit
and alls well in the world again

thanks to you that replied.
