good evening,i have had no end of trouble trying to get my brakes working to an acceptable standard,by acceptable I mean safe for myself and other road users,i have discovered that my worn rear drums are odd,the drivers side has smaller wheel nuts, looking at parts lists some suppliers show 2 different 10inch drums,i suspect that the later have beefed up studs,if I am correct would it be o.k to buy 1 of each?.also, would the smaller nut size be an issue with the wheel security?,my 6 wheels all have the same size holes,,i have fitted used servo and pedal, new wheel cylinders, master cylinder, shoes, pipes, springs+adjusters to the front[11inch tls] and back so new drums will complete a new system, once the system is up and running I will buy a new servo, also at a later date I will address the odd sizes properly but for now I want a quick, acceptable fix to keep the impetus going,
I have to do my in land rover outside in a field @ west cornwall so I have often been away from it due to the rotten weather,i am just getting my latest shopping list together so hence my enquiry,
any advice will be as ever, most welcome,
seasons greetings,ryn

Quite a lot of questions for this time on Christmas Night.
My first thought would be that most of these old vehicles have been quite cut about, and different parts added over the years. So it is possible that you have a Series hub and brake on one side, and a hub and brake off a Ninety, which would have different size nuts, on the other.
It would probably be best to go back to a standard set up for your vehicle if possible.
Also, it would be helpful if you state exactly what age and engine option your vehicle is.

Whereabouts in West Cornwall? I lived a few miles outside Hayle for 25 years, and know the area well.

you will need to have a look at the back of the hubs to compare early ones had studs that where threaded into hub when they pull out the fix is to put pull in studs which generally are longer. someone may have also fitted a later or earlier hub to one side.

What year is your landy ? The Hub's stud type and nut size [ as described by Blackburn ] changed in 1967 along with other things like single wiper motor system. Hubs then remained the same for the rest of series production. Early 90 rears also the same.

Yes drums will be ok on older studs wheels are centred on the cone of the nut not the studs , try getting some one to apply the brakes to centre the drum before you tighten the wheel nuts may make a difference. Lots of post regarding old drums with three securing screws and new only having one. Centre of drum is normally a neat fit on hub.

good morning,it is a dec '69 2 1/4 petrol u.s [or intermediate?] spec safari 88,,i have had a good search on the net and found an Australian site that has all the years, stud and nut sizes,it appears that for a short while small studs were still used but were the larger size across the flats, maybe,if correct, finding such nuts is an answer just for now,a search on ebay showed a few hubs at reasonable prices, some good, some bad, so in the new year after the brakes are fettled I will sort it,it does seem strange though that the newer sized drums are o.k to use on the older hubs which is my main concern,i am based at tregonning, wet west cornwall,
thanks

Nice, but as you say, wet. Been talking to a few of my mates in Cornwall on the phone over Christmas.
One chap, lives on a hill behind Druth, says there were only 2 hours when it didn't rain in the week before Christmas.
Hang in there, it will be ansum by May! :D

S2A hubs are 9/16 BSF S3 hubs are M16. Sounds like you may have a mix (not uncommon by now). Same wheels fit both and now all the new drums are sold to fit M16 but seem ok on the 9/16 as well as they locate on the hub spigot not the studs.
