So a nooby question here..

How do I tell what size a bolt/nut is, as the head is obviously bigger than the actual threaded bit.. also what kind of sizes do I need for the series (metric? imperial?)?
Do the nut sizes have any relation to the size of the bolt? like the outside size, obviously the thread fits the thread of the bolt..
So I can have a nice collection handy for that time when I remove the body/stuff and have to replace every single bolt...

So what I'm kinda trying to ask is; what sizes do I need and where can I buy them in bulk online? So I can have like a 100 of each size in the garage.

Sorry for my derpy questions, but I guess you only find stuff out by asking. :p

Thanks in advance.

Craig

I wouldn't bother getting a 100 of each as there would be quite a few sizes and lengths needed. Just buy as and when you need them. The size of a nut or bolts thread size is measured across diameter of actual thread and not the bolt head/ nut outer size. I expect there would be both imperial and metric on a series.

100 of each type + nut + washers? Have a google for a price of a decent bolt, and think if you want that much cash sitting in your garage rusting away :der:

series 3 will be imperial mostly with whitworth used on the gear box ,later ones will have metric as well , size of bolt or nut for imperial and metric is the diameter of thread , a 6mm bolt has 10mm head ,8mm -13mm head,10mm -17mm,12mm -19mm,imperial 1/4 bolt has 7/16 head ,5/16 has 1/2 head ,3/8 has 9/16

Well 50 of each then. :( I just would like selection to hand, so I don't have to drive to a shop in the middle of doing something. Plus all the shops around me will be mucho expensive, compared to buying online. And I don't really know what to look for. :/

If they are stored correctlly they shouldnt rust either. :)

Same here, I'm always surprised when I have two eyes left when I leave places around here.

Come back with the price when you've worked it out, maybe it won't be as bad as I thought :)

There was a company at the LRO Peterborough show selling complete nut & bolt sets for all Series Land Rovers, but I didn't take their details. I buy most of my nuts and bolts from either Paddocks if it's Land Rover specific or Clerkenwell Screw & Nut in Wembley if it isn't.

I can get 50 cage nuts/bolts/washers for a fiver on fleabay, so I was hoping these would be about the same.

Thanks for all the help so far. :)

I have bought some selection boxes of metric stainless nuts bolts and washers from Screwfix. I have also bought stainless screws etc from Westfield Fasteners. If you just need smaller qualtities - packets etc, Klass Olsen are quite handy and based in Reading :)

You can soon spend £200 on bits and bobs but probabky worth doing if your going to refurb a Landy. I got so fed up of scraping about in the garage. I can now just go to the shelf and get exactly what I need 95% of the time

Not for a series .

So far it's the smaller ones I've found to be the ones you need, especially 1/4" (6mm) and 5/16" (8mm) which are used to hold body panels etc on all over the place and invariably snap off or need cutting off. I'm not a rivet counter so have replaced quite a few with Halfrauds crappy random nuts and bolt selections and expect to have to cut them back off again.... However recently I ordered about 20 off nut washer sprig and bolt from craddocks and they were reasonably cheap, not sure of the quality though.

Most of the bigger stuff is more expensive and less likey to need cutting off...Probably worth buying a set of floor screw and spire clips if the floors not been up for a while as I had to grind most of them off the first time

My local old-fashioned engineering shop do stock a selection of imperial stuff at almost reasonable cost but the sales staff are the most sullen bunch of feckers in the world and look like you've asked them to suck you off if you ask for imperial stuff but usually come up with the goods with a bit of encouragement! They do stock some "selection boxes" of nuts, bolts and washers which are well worth having to hand

download the parts book and plan jobs there are no standard bolts on a series as said you have metric, imperial and whit but not only that you have different shank lengths as well as bolt lengths by all means buy a hand full of bits and bobs but shanks are there for a reason..
