i,m getting used to this land rover malarky now, fix one fault then find another!! anyways my latest problem is this, when steering from straight aheadeither left or right theres a slight free play notch for want of a better word. if your already steering left or right and you move the steering wheel left or right theres nothing but if you move the steering wheel left or right from straight ahead its there. i,ve changed the four ball joints on the steering, draglinks and whilst they were off i checked the steering box for play but there wasn,t any.i,m out of ideas so its over to you boys. cheers

o you mean the ujs on the steering column,? good call i hadn,t thought of them, i,ll check after i,ve eaten my leftover turkey. why are landrovers like this? i normally have newish cars and cant be bothered to wash em never mind anything else, but here i am over christmas under my disco in the frost, my wife thinks i,ve gone nuts!! cheers

I agree with Redhand - probably a steering column UJ. My lower one seized up and I managed to free it off for a while but it seized up again so I replaced it with a new one - massive improvement in "feel" to the steering afterwards.

If its a notch from str8 on more one way than the other it could end up been a new steering box like mine was cos there's a shaft inside it you can't replace where something rubs against it as you drive in a str8 line as we all do most of the time and eventually this shaft develops a notch. There easy enough to replace and bleed so long as you get a new drop arm with it cos the old one is a real bastid to get off. in end I took a grinder to mine GRRRRRRRRRRRR.

hope I'm wrong but I recon it could be that but check everything else first cos they ain't cheep

At the bottom of the steering box there is a steering arm which is held in place by a large nut and lock washer. On a previous vehicle I found that the nut had come undone just enough to allow the lock washer to move and therefore create a sort of lump, either side of straight ahead.

with mine it was the drop arm ball joint causing the problem, get someone to rock the steering without engine running and look play in the ball joint

As the the above posts, as you have replace the four ball joints then it is either the column UJ if it's worn you may also get some vibration felt through the steering wheel or the steering box is worn or requires adjusting and thats it.
Also check the drop arm but as the nut is torqued to 130 lbs ft. it shouldn't come loose on it's own.
