Just got one myself.

Its a 1998 (I think) Discovery 2,

2.5ltr Turbo Diesel.

Automatic transmission :(

Faded and pealed green colour, currently sitting on the side of a mountain, waiting for me to send a truck to pick it up !

The car is a non runner so I got it very cheap.

The previous owner let it there because it wouldnt start one morning and its been sitting there since December 2005

He was told that it wouldnt bring diesel to the injectors - which I'm hoping is an easy fix - but he never bothered checking it out by a mechanic or anyone else, as he had other cars to move around with and he didnt have the time to deal with it.

So here I am, hoping that I can get some help from you guys to get this Disco back on the road.

This is actually a risk I was willing to take.
If I manage to repair the car easily (mechanically at least) and get it running, then its going to be a keeper and fully restored to former glory.
If it needs a lot to repair, I'll cut my losses and move on.

By the way... been an automatic... does this make it a crappy offroader ? Never had an automatic car before in my life

ok, thats good to know, because to be honest, been an automatic put me off a bit.

I like offroading and I would be very disappointed if I couldnt use it the way I want to due to the gearbox

check lift pump for the diesel might be as simple as that !!!
also put new diesel in it !!!
give it a good check before you start it up as its being sat a while
good luck

1998 disco 2? probably a disco 1 300tdi, can you stick some pics up and we will be able to identify it much more easily then, oh and :welcome: too

yes... I might be wrong there mate.

Identification is a must if I'll start looking for parts ! lol

Will post some pictures very soon. All I know for sure is that its a 2.5 Turbo Diesel one.

Looks like this one (well not in this condition anyway) :

well that looks like an early Disco 2, how many cylinders has the engine got? that will at least help identify it between TD5 and 300tdi

No rust - whats in the air there ?:)
Have seen cars parked up for 12/18 mths and was shocked at the amount of rust that had developed .
How is interior ?
Have seen the friction material come off brake pads ( rust ) on cars parked up for only a few months .
Our climate over here in Ireland must be the reason .

Ah yes. If it is indeed a Disco 2 then all may well appear rust free when you look at the bodywork. They're good that way. Walk around to the back, lie down and look at the underside. If you can still see no rust, then you've still got two wishes left...

I live near the sea (on a mountain) and Ive seen cars sitting near mine get eaten away by the tinworm incredibly quickly, a few months sitting and the disks are so badly pitted they have to be replaced.

Any Disco1/2 sitting for such a long time exposed in such a way is surely going to rot somewhere, the rain has been collecting/running down the same places for years.

Maybe it was really well looked after and treated with lots of rust protection before it went kapputt but if this was the case surely it wouldnt just be left for years just because it wouldnt start.

All Im sayin is that my disco was used daily and was once looked after very well, All seemed well until I went digging, 8 months later and it has had work on both rear arches, both sills, all ABC pillars, headlamp box, battery tray, both inner wings and a few spots on the bulkhead.

I appreciate your optimism having a LandRover that attitude will help you greatly but please bear in mind they can be moneypits and rot boxes, know when to walk away. There are good ones out there but there are also lots of dogs.

If this one is cheap enough but rotten it may be worth having purely as a donor car.

Being '98 it could be a TDi 300 (4 cylinder) or a TD5 (5cylinder).

Autos are great off-road.

Now, assuming it is a TD5, once you've got a decent battery attached, turn the key to position II and listen by the rhs rear wheel arch - you should be able to hear the in-tank electric fuel pump. If there's no pump noise, that's the place to start. Check fuses, check the supply to the pump. If they are both k your pump is goosed - not uncommon - fit new pump (cost £120 to £210, check Ebay) and cross your fingers.

HAHAHA
We only have one climate and 450 different types of rain. 350 of those types we don;t even have names for!

Well, rust wize, I might be overly optimistic here, but I didnt see any

the ownership paper was lost and I'm waiting for a replacement. I had a call yesterday from the guy with the truck, to go up there and pick it up, but I was extremely bussy at work and couldnt make it :(

Just downloaded RAVE as well.

To be honest, I do like Land Rovers but I was kinda hopping it isnt a money pit and it didnt have any rust issues !

The only important rust on a DII is in the rear half of the chassis.
