good morning all
todays problem is this
ive got a strange whurling noise coming from what seems to be the rear of the landrover.
this noise only comes when its not under load either from driving force or the gearbox slowing the car down ,
was told it sounds like the diff but just taken the diff out and it looks fine
could it be the transfer box ?
strange thing is ive tried running it without rear prop on and there is no noise and even stranger is when i lower the rear end the noise seems to disapear again
hope someone can help
thanks carl .

Hoping you find an answer - have the same on mine (1994 90)

So far have replaced prop, diff, wheel bearings, transfer box and gearbox :(

Next on my list to look at are the halfshafts in case spline related

Absolutely road speed related with mine, only when power off, and not affected by gear, clutch in or out or turning from side to side:eek:

Re - reading your post, could by prop ujs on way out:confused:

noise on overrun is usually pinion bearings which you cant see unless you strip it ,you should have took it for a spin whilist diff was out ,intermediate gear can cause similar end float can be felt with box sump off and adjusted with the nut , endfloat in diff can be felt too but nothing you can do apart from rebuild
