No transfer box oil!

Hi,

My first post, I've been reading the forum a while.

Today I noticed that the drain plug on the transfer box of my 1997 Tdi 90 300 was missing.
Is it possible for the nut to work loose or has someone deliberately removed it? any ideas?

Are you sure it's the drain plug that is missing ? Yes, maybe ...

As @Dippypud says. I'd guess it's more likely to be a drain hole where a wading plug might, or not, fit. Take a pic and someone will say which it is ...

It's at the garage now so I can't be 100% sure, it was a horizontal threaded hole in the bottom of the box.

I checked the workshop manual and YouTube and I'm fairly sure it's the drain plug, some small oil spots on the gravel drive as well. If it wasn't tightened correctly at the last service could it have worked loose?

The transfer drain plug isn't horizontal?

I'm guessing you've looked at the wading plug hole in the flywheel housing as it's not uncommon for oil to drip from that area. I just hope you've got a honest garage.....

Only small spots ? When it comes back put a sheet of cardboard under it, it'll help you find out where any leaks are coming from, there are usually one or two.

Maybe a stoopid question, but have you read your your owners manual?

Do you have the workshop manual? even a Haynes would do?

Sorry @neilly , but what for???? if it for soaking up the oil, then fair enough

@Sofasurfer - the haynes is sometimes referred to as the book of lies - it will, of course, tell you some basic stuff like the location of the wading plugs etc. .. However, a better option in so many ways, not least of which is that it's free is the RAVE manual - which a search on here will find you a link for... its the official manual, and is rarely bettered

Yes, I've had a look at the workshop manual, that's what made me think it's the drain plug. I'm going to the garage tomorrow to find out

Altho I use mine for the more advanced checking of the snorkel system.

I've got a pdf of the full workshop manual from Land Rover, it's diagrams in the Maintenance section are not very good. I'll download the RAVE manual and compare them, presumably they are different?

It was the wading plug hole. The garage didn't charge anything

No transfer box oil!
