no sound when truck is cranked =(

hi guys i have a 1972 series 2a diesel. ytd i tried to crank the car but there was no sound at all.not even the 'tak tak' sound the a faulty starter solenoid wil make. battery is okay as all the lights and horns work. i have taken apart the solenoid and cleaned the contact points inside but the situation is still the same. the night before i cranked the truck quite a few times because i didnt know there was no diesel so i think i may have burnt something. after i put diesel in the truck started as per normal. the next morning it made no sound. please assist! thanks!

Short large solinoid terminals and see if it turns over

i also tried to connect the contact points on the starter solenoid like how i would start the truck without a key(have done this many times).this time round there were no sparks/nothing happened/truck still wont start

Check all earth wires, add new ones if in any doubt. If the braids feel dry and crumbly, replace them and fix to good, clean, solid points.

Ignition switch might be faulty, check connections ..

at this point can we rule out a faulty starter motor? so its just the wirings?

I wouldn't assume the battery is ok because the lights work. Try jumping off another vehicle.

To check wiring use jump leads. Battery -ve to engine, battery +ve to main feed on solenoid.

The small spade connection on the solenoid (on the engine side) sometimes makes a bad connection or falls off.......it's the solenoid exciter.....so check that. You can check faulty ignition switch by running a small wire from battery +ve and touching it on the spade connection (make sure it's in nuetral first!).

If none of that works then it's back to the solenoid and/or starter

sounds like an earth issue, check n clean up the main earths

get a pair of jump leads, use one to earth the block to the chassis and the other to run power from battery direct to starter terminal

I am with blue beasty on this check out the small spade connector. Mine has given similar problems to yours in the past.

u may have missed but the op has shorted the main solenoid connectors with no luck... that rules out the solenoid spade as he's already bypassed it

hence theres also no point mentioning ignition switch... another common fault
