when at briarcliff today in the 200tdi disco at some point my home made snorkel pipe come apart, (iv got rid of the land rover air box) i don't know when it came apart...
so at 3 i noticed i had a problem i couldn't get any revs past 2000 to 3000 rpm :eek:so popped the bonnet to find the snorkel apart put it back together and all seemed ok had revs and power no smoke :), so did a bit more for 40 mins then the same thing happened no power and loads of smoke but all was still together this time , so called it aday, drove 2 mile if that on the road goin up a bit of a hill i had loads of black smoke no power not even in 1st gear so i put it in low box got a bit more up the hill and it backfired, so pulled over and got recovery.

what have i done this time plz help ??:confused::mad::confused::mad::confused::mad:

gona start with a good wash,, think it may have sucked up some ****,,, dont know what to do ????? try and sort it my self ?? or put it for sale as non runner ? dont know what to do ??? this could be the end of off road in for me now :mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::lvlove-158:

The fault you describe is that of a restriction in the air intake system. It could be a hose split, delaminated or come adrift or as your snorkel came apart you may got the filter wet or clogged.

i took off the original air box and filter off, i just have some drain pipe with a cone on the top, so any crap, mud and water would of gone into the turbo ???

I agree .. if you've run without a filter then you're likely to have fecked the turbo and anything in the engine .. if water's got in you could have hydrauliced the head, bending valves etc etc ... diesels like clean air, to remove the air filter is a big no-no ..

OTOH, it might have all been blown through and out the exhaust and all you've got is a broken air inlet tube ... I'd strip the snorkel off, check carefully the turbo etc, take the inlet manifold off, intercooler, intercooler hoses and check all pipes/tubes for crap plastered to them. Indeed take the whole air intake system off completely.

If you're lucky you've got **** in the tubes that can be cleaned out, if you're unlucky you've potentially fecked the engine proper .. :)

And fit a filter!!!!

the disco still start and runs no smoke on tick over and sounds ok, i have a collapsed inter cool pipe as well i think ?? pipe goin from engine to top of rad

OK, but the trouble may already be done on the valves etc ... but it does sound like you might be lucky, here's hoping .. :)

I'd also, after thinking about it, drop the engine oil and change the filter. This might also be one of those times when a proper engine flush might do some good .. removing the bits of inlet pipe that have got burnt onto stuff ... ;)

But definitely take all the air inlet system off, including the intercooler, and check/clean it out.

I'd also fit an air cleaner, even if it's only a k&n at the top of the snorkel, anything's better than nothing .. but the filter won't help if the pipe comes apart in the engine bay!!! so make sure it's bolted up properly.

When you've put it all back together, run on tickover with the bonnet up and have someone block the air inlet ... watch the pipes collapse and see if/where they come apart, that'll give you an idea of how easy it is to suck water and ****e into the engine. Don't try and block the inlet with your hand, it might be OK at tickover, but if it's revving at all there is a distinct possibility of damage to your hand, not kidding! These engines drink air like there's no tomorrow .. :)

thankyou paul ur a very help full man, i will take all the air inlet system off, including the intercooler, and check/clean it out. may be put the intercooler in the bath let it sock in hot water

Be better buying a gallon of paraffin .. hot water won't do a great deal only take the surface off.

Fill the intercooler to 1/3rd full, shake it well, let it soak for 15 minutes, shake it again, turn ti over and let it soak on a different part of the ic for another 15 minutes, shake it well, tip it out, same again with fresh paraffin, then same again. First couple of times it's likely to have a lot of bits and be very blackwhen you tip it out ... third time ought to be clearer, maybe still a bit mucky but nothing like first time ... ;)

I'd also want to do the same with the inlet manifold, and pipes, but I'd (being a tight git) probably re-use the ic paraffin, filtered first ... ;)

If it is an intercooler pipe colapsed as you think it is then that will usually be the reason for your loss of power and smoke (assuming no engine damage has been done).

well made a start today only to find i dont have a spanner bigger than a 19mm, this is a bigger job to do than 1st thought, need to go buy new spanners lol

Don't forget to change the oil . if water did get in and there's still some in the sump then it might turn into gringing paste and really go to town on the engine .. ;)

If he is VERY lucky he may get away with just cleaning out the intercooler.

If there was a paper air filter in it and that got soaking wet that too could choke the engine of air and make black smoke and no power.

Take the air-pipe off at the inlet manfold and take it for a short run like that. If the engine is not damaged internally, it should start and run clean, and rev up well, but not a lot of power. It will be noisy too.

That should be your first test. If it passes, work BACKWARDS towards the air inlet, and clean it all out.

av started to strip the intercooler yesterday took off all pipes they was a bit dusty inside and let all the water out, so going to clean them out today, then take the rocker cover off and have a look at the push rods.

this is the biggest job iv ever done on a motor, and dont know what am doin lol, but il get there in the end

But he didn't have a paper air filter or any air filter ! Maybe he sucked a squirrel in  :D

:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D iv fixed the disco, it was the intercooler, got a used one for £10. then did engine flush, new oil & filter, put air box back in with a new filter, so it now has 2 air filters. the air box and the K&N style at the top of the snorkel, im happy iv done it myself for a change instead of sending it to the garage :D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D

wouldnt having 2 filters restrict the airflow?

Nice one Stu, as Nathan says, don't overdo the filtering ... but make sure you have some!!!
