Hi, hope someone can help.
I lost dive in my 1989 2.5 diesel N/A. I was pulling out of a junction, when all of a sudden it stopped going. Engine was running fine. I thought it may have jumped out of gear, but no. No gears seemed to work. With the engine running I can put in gear without pushing in the clutch pedal. There is a slight grinding noise coming from under the gear stick, and going up the gears it becomes a little bit louder. The propshafts aren't turning. Also the clutch is fairly new.
Any help would be most appreciated.
Paul

If the gears are not working and you can select them without needing the clutch then that implies something has broken on the drivetrain. If both propshafts are stationary then that to me sounds like a box problem - either a sheared input shaft or layshaft or the clutch has major problems somewhere. Are you still stuck by the roadside?

is transfer gear box stillin gear? if you take r0und cover off back of transfer box at top of box you can see end of gear box out put shaft is is it still turning input gear of transfer box or have splines worn so badly it is freeweling

managed to get it home thanks

I'd go with what @chris-the-gerbil says but ask the following too ...

Has it jumped to neutral between Hi/Lo ? Have you been running it on road with difflock on? How does the clutch feel? and does the clutch make any odd noises?

Glad you got it home. If theres no drive in difflock as mentioned probably a box issue!

I blew a front diff in France, barely made a noise also had a wheel bearing explode again no noise just loss of drive.

Played around with hi/lo seems okay. No driving with difflock on and clutch feels normal.

Dunno, my 90 was a LT77 and 19J engine, so a tad later ...

If both propshafts are stationary then the transfer case is either out of gear, or not getting drive. (or broken). Or the problem is further up towards the engine. Without stripping the case or box off theres not really much more can be determinied I don't think. You can take off the PTO plate that shows you the output from the gearbox so you can see if that's spinning freely or not.

So if that's the case pull the PTO plate and see if you can see the splines...? I thought the spline issue was just a R380 peculiarity but if the earlier boxes do it then it fits the symptoms....

don't realy know hgv/heavy plant man only had one v8 ninty with lt85 solid case box done 160000 only slight spline wear
spline failure was never seen on the lt85 but slight was common probably better steel but most likely the lack of diesel harshness with the smooth v8

thanks james iwould like to thank landyzone for awording me I don't realy know where to post this only just finding out about computers silly old duffer I should have learnt yers ago

If it is a gearbox failure it's not catastrophic, as there are a lot of firms which can supply refurbished/reconditioned units, including James himself but he doesn't advertise it on here. The main thing is to determine whether it's the main box or the transfer box that's at fault so you know what you need.
