No Dipped Beam!!!!! But.. Have Main Beam!!!

Hello again. Me again. Right the problem this time is that I have no dipped beam but I have main beam. All the other lights work like the side lights. Could it be the foot switch that has gone? Any suggestions?

I've got the opposite problem - Dip but no High and am tooooo lazy to get into footwell to have a look at switch ( which is dickie i suspect ) so will wait and see what replies are before doing 'owt

I had 50/50 of your problems, I had one dip one high and then one high and one dip.

I guess you have checked the bulbs, and its not just they have both poped, do some checking with a multimeter and see where your getting 12v. Could be the relays burnt out.

Hello, i sprayed some WD40 on the switch and cleaned the connectors and it now works. We are now wiating till the WD drys out and then give it another test. But just try cleaning the connections first and spray WD.

i have had all of the above at some stage, as oily said the first thing (easiest) is to clean the lamp fittings with wd40, usually solves most of the lighting snags.
with the dipped/main beam i have had the dashboard switch be the problem but this can be checked with a multimeter for continuity, otherwise swap the cables for side with dipped to see if the fault swaps over

beware of taking it for granted that if you have 12V at the lamp holder (or anywhere along the system without the lamp in) that your cabling is good, the cable could have continuity without a load but as soon as you put the lamp back in and you start to draw current the cable may be unable to deliver the neccessary to light the lamp. the usual clues that your cableing may be in this state are that the insulation may have gone hard/brittle or that the wire will be oxidised (black in colour). answer - run new cable!

THey are still working like they should which is great as we hope to take it for an MOT after been off the road for nearly 3 years after a few more jobs are done on it

Well I had the main no dipped prob and traced it back to the main beam indicator switch but alas I couldnt get hold of a second hand one and a new puppy cost around £150 quid from landrover soooooooo and the whole design of the switch is crap in the first place I expect Fred and Barney had a similiar one in there stone car possibly made by lucas also anyhow while scraping through the scrappys i discovered that the wiring is identical to that of the discovery so after a bit cut and shut yeh ha new switches for hazzards indicator horn lights and wipers best fifteen quid ive spent and the whole job only took an hour

The best ( and only ) way to fix this problem is to wire the lights thru a couple of relays ( see FAQ section). That way the contacts in the switches are only conducting low currrent and won't burn out.
