Newbie with some questions (common I think)

Hi All,

I'm from OZ and am new to Freelander ownership (although I do own some other Land Rovers....)

I recently purchased this - 1998, Tdi4 with 270,000km on the clock:

From my initial inspection there are 5 issues with it.

1) Injector pump leak.
I believe that this is a common issue and that I should run a seal kit through it. Can anybody suggest the part number that I require? (I've seen talk of Bosch and BMW, but don't want to purchase the wrong kit)

2) Flexible Exhaust leak
I believe that I have an exhaust leak from the back of the engine from the flexible exhaust. Can this be replaced? Can somebody please suggest the part number?

3) Rear Prop Shaft / VCU
I believe that the VCU works HOWEVER this bearing has a lot of slop in it - causing the clunking from the prop. Is this bearing (is that what you call it) replaceable? If so - is there a part number or tutorial?

4) Sagging Head Liner - do Land Rover sell a vehicle that doesn't have this issue! This is easy enough to sort out.

5) Missing clip/knob on the fuse box lid.. I went to a wreckers yard last night and was going to buy the entire lid - until I noticed that the wreck had exactly the same issue, the actual clip/knob/lock is missing. Is this a common part that can be replaced? (What's the part number please)

My plans are:
* Address the above issues
* Buy a Hayes repair manual
* Frequent this site
* Full service - all fluids & filters
* Cut & Polish
* Replace the steel wheels with alloys

I purchased these from the wrecker last night -5 alloy's with really good meat left on the tyres. It was cheaper to buy these then 5 new tyres

download the Rave manual
check the "what every freelander owner should know" thread from @GrumpyGel
do the "one wheel up test" immediately and at regular intervals.
always replace tyres in axle sets and put new ones on rear.
 
Blinking ek, that's a list!

The first thing to say though is that you don't have a TD4 - you don't have the BMW M47 engine, you have the Rover L Series 'TCie' engine - don't worry, its a super engine :)

However, forget looking for bits for the TD4 and look for the earlier L Series.

The thread and test that MHM refers to above is here. Its important reading for all Freelander owners even if you think you know everything about trucks - Freelanders are very different to a Japanese selectable 4WD or other Land Rover permanent 4WD trucks...

Will come back later ans answer some questions, but once again the pic you've put up of a bearing isn't a bearing - its a CV joint.

The pump is a Bosch VP37. They are very reliable but any pump can leak.
2) Flexible Exhaust leak

Don't know, I used to use a website that listed all the part numbers but they've stopped listing them!

It could be the CV that is clunking, but are you sure it is that? CVs are supposed to have a lot of movement and if the boot isn't split, don't tend to wear. The more likely clunking is from the rear diff. It is supported on 3 mounts - 2 at the back of it and 1 at the front. The 1 at the front is very liable to breaking up which causes "clunks". If it is this, cheap ones don't tend to last long, its worth getting a decent one.

Non standard TDI stickers have probably confused the issue GG ;).

Make sure all tyre pressures are the same make, type and size and put the pair of tyres with the MOST WORN tread on the front.
The LEAST WORN tyre can go on the rear door wheel mount as the spare.
The remaining pair should have more tread than the front, but less tread than the spare, these go on the REAR of the car.
It sounds silly, but the Freelander is hyper sensitive to tyre placement, if expensive transmission damage is to be avoided.
