Hi AGAIN,

Need some more advice please....Im still having problems with lack of after fitting the new maf. I had the sensor replaced only with a pierburg part no.722684090. I have not fit a mafam....After reading that this particular maf replaces the bosch maf which is in the F.L.

On saturday I disconnected the old maf and she went great....hence fitting the new one.

While some of the problems I had seem to be cured ie. loss of power up hill...just died.....this seems to be fixed can make the hills no problem! The main problem now is lack of power on flat???? Im soooooo at a loss as to what to do. After fitting the new maff and the change occuring, I disconnected the battery for 30 mins (read this so gave it a try) still no change....I do seem to have a little more power on occasions but Ther is def still a major problem with the power......and feeling like its just given up......seems to hit a flat spot around 50mph and no matter how hard I push down on gas it just will not budge....until either slowing down.....or deciding she is ready to go again....TEMPRAMENTAL OR WHAT!!!!!! I also cant seem to get passed 70mph...unless with a little gravatational help.....going down hills then can reach 90mph. Before all these problems started she would go at 90mph no problem and sustain...
I also feel like im using more fuel......but im not sure whether this is because Im flooring it more (when I can) to see what she can do?????

PLEASE HELP!!!!

Carolyn

Have you got any smoke out the exhaust when it's playing up? If so what colour?

Is the EGR (exhaust gas recirculation) valve still present or has it been removed?

Have you tried unplugging the new MAF to see if the power returns again as it did when you unplugged the old one?

hi...
Thanks for reply ratty.....

No smoke this dissappeared when changed the breather filter....not disconnected it but will def give it a go!! After 7.30pm tonight though as working:-(

Not touched the EGR valve....Is it a big job...my fella was not too impressed the other night when changed the sensor....he thinks F.L are the most awkward engines to work on!!! Everything difficult to get too.....and stupid fittings to stuff...namely the strange torxs!!! that thing with the hole and pin through it!!! NOT IMPRESSED....will it be a major difficult job to get to the EGR valve and replace it....are these things cheap.....??? Im going to have to rob a bank soon!!

The egr valve can be removed altogether rather than replaced. ;)

So you mean just remove the valve...and dont replace with a new one?? is it difficult to get to with awkward nuts and bolts to have to remove?? Why is it in there if not required and then can cause problems???? Bit like the appendix.....!!!!! (in humans that is)!!!

The egr valve allows some of your exhaust gases to go back through the engine to get burnt for a second time around. The idea is to help reduce emissions. Unfortunately the valve tends to get sooted up (as a household chimney would) and then jams partially open which reults in a loss of power. The egr blank sends ALL the exhaust gases out the exhaust pipe.

Oh great...blankin kit.....sounds complicated :-( shall i look on Ebay....?? Does this have to be specific blankin kit for TD4 2002 model?

It's not complicated. :)

As far as I'm aware it's one kit fits all. They do vary a lot in price though hence asking peeps for recomenadtions as to best kit for best price.

there are a couple on ebay. One at £30 and another at £50.

LAND ROVER FREELANDER TD4 EGR REPLACEMENT/BYPASS VALVE on eBay (end time 22-Jul-10 14:26:11 BST)

Landrover Freelander TD4 EGR "SUPERFLOW" Bypass Valve on eBay (end time 16-Jul-10 11:55:30 BST)

Somebody correct me if i'm wrong but if you replace the bosch maf with a pierburgh one, you need either a mafam compensator or a synergy 2 box.

Otherwise it will not work correctly.

As for the EGR kits that first one looks like S**T. Get the second one (black one) form egrman

Going to try again with the maf disconnected....if this works ok....does that mean I require a synergy mafam from rover ron???

if you intend to run with the pierburg maf then you will definitely need a mafam, there's no way it'll run right without it.
As for the egr, they are very easy to replace with a bypass pipe from ebay. Go on to Roverrons site & have a good read about all things to do with the Td4 engine, it's well worthwhile.

Agreed, go with the second dearer unit, its far better quality & has everything there just to fit it in. The cheaper one looks tinny & doesn't have the pin for the vacuum pipe & it doesn't clearly show the exhaust blanking portion which needs to be well made.

Thanks will check them out....I have looked on rover ron site....and here on landyzone....and other areas from google.....the pierburg maf i got (part no. 722684090) apparently replaces the bosch used by landrover, there are 2 other pierburg mafs slightly different part no.'s ending in 080 and 070 (if i remember correctly), which everyone mentioned would require the mafam. I did email rover ron for a quote...but cant really afford £253.....the quote i got back for pierburg and synergy (mafam).
I got hold of the maf (prob the same price as rover ron) without the synergy...from leeds which meant I could collect and fit without waiting post delivery....I think it be worthwhile e mailing again regarding the maf I fit......along with the part no. see what is recomended......prob another £150 for the synergy!!!!
The faults I have seem to be related to quite a few different parts...maf.....egr.....etc....process of elimination I guess or termination the way I feel!!!

anyone else heard of the above maf NOT requiring a mafam???? I have read 1 thread on here from a guy who purchased it from germany...said he didnt fit mafam and onced replaced with the pierburg...motor ran "sweet as a nut"
Anyone know where I can get one of those "nuts" if not......!!!!!!

Before parting with your cash for an EGR blanking kit, just remove the EGR & clean it with carb cleaner (still available from Halfrauds ), you can physically see if it is closed properly, then just replace it & leave the little vacuum pipe disconected with a self tapping screw in the end to blank it off, that will tell you if it is the EGR thats causing your performance loss.;)

ok...thanks...and if this works then buy the EGR blankin kit and replace?? When you say use a self tapping screw in the end (forgive me for prob sounding dumb, this is very new to me...humans are what i try fix), this is to keep it closed for testing?? can i leave it like this for a few days until I can get fella to fit the new one if it is required?? Also if it isnt the problem should he then remove self tapper and re connect the hose back to how it was?? I assume "yes" ?????

Mine has been disconnected for over a year now, benefits are that you don't get all the gunk & gunge taking a short cut into your inlet system. You will still need to clean it though because even if you disconnect the tube the valve itself could be passing if it is coked up. can't be sure but I think I used a number 6 self tapping screw to seal the flexible tube, any size screw that is a snug fit will do.
Which bits of humans do you fix ?, are you any good at legs, broke mine falling down a Dale that I was trying to get up in the Freelander , hoping to get the plaster off on Monday & then go & have another go at getting up the Dale the weekend after :).

Did you ever get to the bottom of this? I also had the same problems time and time again and in the end my mechanic discionnected some of the wires to the air flow meter and it works fine. Don't know if it affects the injectors but they were a bit grubby - they just cleaned them up and its running like a super star now. Sorry for late posting...:)

not solved as yet...new post today actually....air flow meter???? is that the maf??? If this is diconnected and motor runs fine...i undersatnd this is faulty maf...I did this, and ran great so i replaced the maf...stil got probs...but think i may not be able to use the maf (pierburg) without a mafam....just want my power back:frusty:
