Hello, I wanted to own a series 3 the same age as me (1974) so have been looking for at least 18 months. I didn't want a barn find but wanted something that runs and can be restored. The year seemed to rarely come to the market and whilst I wanted a petrol I saw a diesel one the other day and put a cheeky bid in and ended up winning it so it arrived on Friday (got it trailered from Scotland to the south). Long story short it's a bit of a shed and whilst it does run it doesn't do it very well so I've bitten off way more than I can chew. First phase of this project is to get it to a specialist to get it in the air and give me an objective opinion and some quote for the structural work then I'll go from there. My question to you pro's is firstly does this make sense and secondly does anyone recommend a decent specialist in the Bristol/Bath area?

Welcome:).

Without pics its gonna be hard for anybody here to advise, hint:).

How are your own DIY skills? I guess asking for a specialist means not much.
Its all doable, wallet will need filling often:eek:.

Send it back if it was not as advertised;).

Hi and welcome!

A series Landy is basically a large meccano kit and can be mostly repaired or rebuilt yourself with some decent tools and space and a parts manual.
I use JC4x4 near thornbury but there are numerous others locally. Broad Lane Land Rovers near westbury have a good reputation as does Steve hill in Brizzle, although I haven’t used them.

Dont forget some pics of the new Landy too. We like pics and can maybe give you a steer as to issues.

Welcome to landyzone hospital for hammer on thumbnail. Could be worth dropping off, on the series section under the title Rust in driving formation.
Can never tell how bad, until someone who has better knowledge offers a opinion. Nevertheless welcome to the zoo.

Probably; and No. ;)

were like that when new;)

firstly does this make sense

(un)common sense & Landrovers don't usually get used in the same sentance, same can be said about most things posted on these forums:D:D:D

it's your dream, project & money - If youwant a Landy then theres the buy it option or the build it properly option:cool:

Plus 1, welcome to the asylum

Like many of us also had an old series landy , if it’s a diesel ur going to need a lot of sound insulation as by christ there noisy at 50mph , lol

When u get chance plse take some piccies including the chassis and we should then at least be able to roughly see what kind of condition it’s in

hiya

never forget my first landy was a series 3 , diesel , 88 , , knew completely nothing so was a massive learning curve , which I must say I really enjoyed , however holy mother of god that was noisy , plus the chassis had more plates that the seventh bridge

Next landy was a series 3 safari petrol, adored that had some wonderful family Hollidays/ days out , was bliss in comparison to the diesel

50mph:eek:

howdyagettittodothat? throw it off a fuckin cliff?o_O

:p

Rich.

lmao,

Could get around 55 Mph out of my old 88 , had burst ear drums after though ;);)

Was a massive relief when the next one was a petrol, however it suffered from a few leaks via, the roof, floor and the door tops would lean outwards as u increased speed

Thanks for the feedback so far. This diesel 88 is the loudest thing ever so good to hear this is common. If I could get it over 40 mph I'll be shocked! I've attached the exterior to this post as to not overload and will attach the gnarly photos on the next post. This gives you a feel for the terrible handpaint job and the seats and steering wheel which I reckon came out of an austin maestro.

Here are the good ones. Worth noting that I've pushed and poked about and even thought he chassis looks terrible with rust and peeling paint it is solid. The bulkhead looks/feels/sounds like the problem. The pics of the driverside pillar and the nearside footwell tell the tale.
Let me know your thoughts!

Stuck some pics in.
DIY skills are very basic but I have a manual, some tools, a driveway and some blind faith!
The guy I bought it off did describe it roughly the same so no problems there, this is what I wanted, I paid for it and I'm now on the journey....

Unless you have pots of money, you will need to diy.
Check out the pricces of restored series motors to get an idea of how much you would have to pay someone else.
Certainly not pots of money but there will be jobs I can take on and others that I'll have to pay the piper so it just means it will take longer but that's the game right?

Cheers pal, I've left a message with Broad Lane as they were recommended by someone else too, cheers for the tip.
