Hello can someone advise me on what Disco would be best for my needs please . I need to tow a heavy trailer 2.5 tonne about 10-12 miles a day on average about 4 times a week .

This vehicle doesn't have to be my family car if it's too thirsty but power or torque is what I need for towing.

Would I be best off with a 4.0 v8 manual disco 2 or is the 3.9 series 1 good enough for what I want to do . Also does the td5 come close to the same towing performance of the v8.

Would I need Lpg considering the short journeys I make .

Lastly what would I expect to pay for a reasonably decent disco that would do the above job

Cheers Paul

As above 300tdi, td5, both will do just fine, most are plated to tow 3500tonnes. My 2.5 Nissan Navara (company car) tows up to 3500 most days all year and copes very well so no real need for big engines with big numbers.

If you want cheap to buy & cheap to run then as said above 300tdi.
If you want refinement & no qualms about cash for running it then the v8.
If you want a bit of both as they say then the Td5.

300 Tdi or TD5, I personally would not get the V8's, wonderful though they are, as you may suddenly find you are using the Disco rather more than intended. The V8's are superb, but vey thirsty when towing and around town. They are not too dreadful on the open road though.

I recently had a very sick 3.9 V8 Disco on a trailer on the back of my 300Tdi. No problem keeping up with the traffic, even though I was probably close to 3.5 ton.

Cheers fellas , one reason I don't think I can have a 300tdi is that I live in the lez congestion charging zone and think if I go diesel it would have to be 2002 onwards although I am not 100% sure . Petrol can be any year I am told .

Isn't lez commercials

If it's going to have little use, then obviously miles per gallon isn't a great concern. to be honest any Discovery will do the job just fine. As indeed will a Defender. I would look for something you're happy with, money-wise and get the best (meaning rust free) example. If bells and whistles are not important either, with a Disco it could be best to get one without sunroofs (no built in showers) and with TD5's the benefits of ACE and air springs are debateable given the upkeep.

Cheers Fellas , some good advice there . Maybe I am wrong about the Lez zone as maybe Disco's with windows and seats are not classed as commercial vehicles .

Got me thinking now that I probably may use it other than for just work so considering a Td-5 just for better economy .

So anyone towed heavy trailers ( 2 ton + ) with both a 4.0 V8 and a Td-5 and is there a great deal of difference for example on long climbing hills .
Cheers Paul

Don't know much about the V8 versions but my TD5 I have had for 4 years, 300tdi before that. No problems towing a 3tonne trailer of sand/cement bricks etc. Towed a 2tonne caravan with any problems and, as already suggested, forgot it was on the back.
Reasonable mpg too.
