hello, new to the site and new to land rovers.
Im after a bit of advice from you people if you wouldn't mind please?
I have just sold my van and am after a discovery, gotta be manual, and diesel so 300tdi or td5 is it?
So basically im after what to look for when viewing one? problem areas?
Owt hidden away,any common bodges?

Which is better for repair costs and economy 300tdi or td5?
I have vast experience in mechanics, both for myself and work, done loads of clutches on most land rovers in my time,so repairs themselves will be done by myself.
I have 2500 to spend but would rather get one for less so I have a buffer zone for repairs/insurance etc.
Any help or advice is appreciated,Thanks.

Hi,

What would be a good idea would be to introduce yourself in the introductions section and then do a search on those questions. I'm positive you will find they have already been covered.

Thanks td5tool,thats what I was thinking myself.
Spacedawg.
I never realised there was an introduction area,is that where new people are judged and then if they seem ok you all answer their posts? Lol
Searching...good call, but if every thread was met with a response like that there surely would be no need for a live forum as everything has got to have been covered before as these cars are at that age no? Could all just be archived.......

Thanks td5tool,thats what I was thinking myself.

:welcome2::welcome2:

Nobody is judged - it's just polite. :D

I'd go 300TDi - cheaper and simpler unless you start to modify.

With your knowledge, the oily bits should be easy to check. The bits to look for are rusty boot flaws (sic), sills, rear wheel arch, inner wings, etc. :D

Na just a warning some peeps here get a little upset when there is no intro.

I went though the same questions you did and ended upto with a 300TDI.

I think the TD5 is a nicer car but there is more to go wrong which is what put me off because I maintain mine myself.

Thanks,iv put a thread in intro anyway.
Im using the car as a daily for me,(mrs has an astra) and it will be pulling a trailer with an autograss car on,at th track its quite muddy, and its what made me sell my combo van, seeing a 406 estate with a mini on get stuck lol
I have looked at freelanders too,but again unsure what im looking at.

I can see why lol
Massive success on the intro thread hahaha

Hi Andy, introductions are just a question of politeness and respect. After all you are asking others to help you.

Anyway, enough of that. Having had TDi200; TDi 300's and TD5's then moved away to a Defender I'm back to Discovery and after a 2 month search of both TD5 and TDi 300 have settled on a TDi 300 auto.

My reasoning is this: TDi's (Disco I) are very susceptible to rust in the body structure, but not usually in the chassis. TD5's (Disco II) are the exact opposite - usually reasonably rust-free in the body but rear-end chassis rust.

TDi 300 is straightforward mechanicals and cheap parts, but just a little crude to drive by comparison to modern vehicles - however still very competent. 30+mpg is easily possible.

TD5 is a more refined road car; easily as competent off-road but more electronics throughout the vehicle. If you can find one without sls and ACE they are less complicated.Average mpg 25-28.

Obviously it depends where YOUR priorities lie, but for us: ease of servicing and repair; cheap parts meaning keep the vehicle in tip-top mechanical condition; perfectly adequate to drive as an everyday car so long as you're not in a hurry; very good workhorse.

For your budget I would advise a TDi300 for no more than £1500, leaving you cash to give it a full service and do a few inevitable repairs/mods.

Good luck in your search,

Dave

thanks biglad.
I think a 300tdi is exactly what I want/need.
Just a question of finding a good un now.

Not an easy task that mate. It took me about 2 months to find one and that was searching the entire UK.

Obviously have a look on Ebay but I found that autotrader.co.uk was useful too.

The best of luck to you.

Dave

Went to go look at one advertised on gumtree earlier.
Seller stated "no rust at all" and was "perfect"
Utter rubbish, inner wings rotten, feeble attempt at covering it with waxoyl.
Oil all over underneath, and incredibly the gearbox SUMP PLUG WAS MISSING.
Luckily I arrived earlier and had a look before my attention was diverted, never even opened a door,he turned up and I said im off,not as you described.
Even had the audacity to send me a text calling me strange....not strange,sensible.Gimp.
The search continues.
