Hi all

New to the forum as just purchased a D reg 90 TD at the weekend, which supposedly had a recon around 120k.

i have the following issues which might be more than I can handle, but thought I'd test the water and see who might be able to help.

It's a bad cold starter - leave the glow plugs on around 30 sec and it'll turn then die, try again and it does the same thing, 3rd attempt usually we get more of a splutter and with a bit of throttle will get going then finally idle. Any suggestions as all glow plugs are new - fuel related maybe?

It blows out white smoke, and does so continally which i think is unburnt Diesel. There is also a valve on top of the head (in the middle) that is also smoking away.

I've taken the pipe off from the turbo and found oil in it, so presumed it was spraying over the air filter, opening the air filter box and found NO AIR FILTER - and a nice puddle of oil! I'm guessing the previous owner removed the filter as it was probably knackered after an hours use...

I'm confused as to why oil is blowing through there, but am guessing that if this problem is solved, i won't have the smoking problem?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated as it's a great little 90 with a pretty good chassis so I think it's got potential to be tarted up as the months drift on.

Thanks

Carl

the TD engine is notorious for wearing out and breathing very heavily - I should know, I had one. Curious you mention white smoke as opposed to blue smoke though, you'd usually see blue smoke with the symptoms you've described.

Hi Guys

Definitely looked like white smoke to me - in fact it was quite easy to see when venting from the valve on the head. I didn't remove the dip stick while it was running, so I'll need to give that a go tomorrow and see whether there's an oil splutter (whilst smoking out the neighbours...whoops!)

Righto - I've tried removing the dip stick whilst it's running today, and no oil is spluttering out. Starting was it's usual self - long pause on the glow plugs, cranks a few times fires and dies. It took four attempts to get it going this time.

i've read on other threads about other peoples TD's having oil get into the air filter - there's been talk of removing the breather pipe from the oil filler and air filter, and this supposedly stops it? I haven't bothered replacing the air filter as yet as I didn't just want to put a new one in for it to get covered in oil again. If this does work is anyone able to tell me exactly which pipe it is that needs removing (a pic would be the most helpful!) - I'm not exactly experienced in sorting these old things out!

Ta.

White smoke on a diesel is indicative of low compression or water in the fuel/air mixture. Either of these are a bad sign on a 2.5 TD. I would save for a 200Tdi. It is an easy enough conversion, particularily into a Defender.

I would take that with a pinch of salt unless you have seen recipets. One mans recon is another mans "jet wash and lick of paint" :)
