New to forum with a few questions

Hi guys, just joined up and have a few questions.

I moved up to Elgin Moray in the north of Scotland last November and brought a 06 Freelander TD4 auto with 80,000 miles on the clock to get about in over winter etc.

I now need it serviced and have several questions.

1. I visited Frank Ogg earlier the local LR dealer and was quoted £551 for the 60 month / 60k (age) service or £443 for the 84 month / 84k service (miles). Any ideas which I should go for, even if I don't have it done at the main dealer?

2. Does anyone know a reliable garage in the Elgin area who can service the freelander and rought idea of cost?

3. I've read alot about VCU replacement on here. When I asked the LR dealer they said they don't need replacing unless the fail !! Is this right?

4. Is there anything else I need to know / do?

Thanks !! Although I partly blame the wife as she didn't want anything bigger and said a defender was too industrial !!

get a divorce

try finding a good independant......mostly run by ex-landy techs but without the main dealer prices.

jack one rear wheel up and turn wheel with bar on wheel nut if it turns slowly and stiffly but smoothly its okay ,check every month

Main dealer told me the same so carrying out the two different checks (marking both props and checking they change position and the weight and bar on the front drive shaft nut) on a regular basis.

Front drive shaft nut???? I thought the test was done on the rear?

marking shafts only prove it turns and is not seized, feeling yourself with bar is better way ,they will turn sometimes quite easily but should stiffen to lock as you speed up turning viscous or apply more torque suddenly as thats what is idesigned to do,

1. What maintenance you have done will depend entirely on it's service history. If it is complete then you should have the 84k service as it becomes due. If the history is incomplete then it all depends on its last known service etc.

3. LR Dealers advice on VCU replacement is total crap because if you literally drive it till it fails you will cause major damage to the rest of the transmission. Given you have recently bought the car I assume you intend keeping it for a while so I would get a re-con VCU so that you can enjoy the reliability from it yourself. It seems pointless to me to try to make them last too long only have to change it later, nearer the time you sell to the next owner.

you wont reach stge of damage if you check as i said ,you could put new one in and it might only lasy a month and you wouldnt know till damage occured

Test the vcu as per the video below ta see whats it's like. Take it from there.

Service list below. Right click on it and select "save pic as..." ta save it to yer phooter.

i know alot wont try anything unless its written in book but i thought some might have been interested in the way that someone who reconditions trasmissions ,axles ,engines etc for myself but previously for one of landrovers reconditioners might have learnt to do it,i know after doing alot you develope a feeling for whats right but so could someone who checked theres regulary by hand and by checking its ability to lock as well as turn

Hi Johnny,I'm in Lossie and use Martin J McAndies garage in Shore Street and recently got him to fully service my Freelander and also repaired the leaking IRD unit,all for a very good price. 01343 815977.
Stay away from Frank Oggs garage in Elgin as they'll rip you off!

Had the freelander serviced at Martin J McAndies garage in Lossiemouth yesterday. Very good service and advice and cost under £190.00 for a full service including all fluids changed.
