Timing belt snapped on my 12J (2.5 NA) engine today. Can i just get some confirmation on how to put new belt in. Is it all three dots lined up with the three arrows on the casing? I am under the impression that TDC is irrelevant as is woodruff key and slot in flywheel?

Thoughts?

It doesn't by a very long way. I looked at setting up with pump and camshaft sprockets lined up with dots and arrows and the crank with slot in flywheel coincinding with hole in flywheel housing but when this is done dot on crank sprocket is about 90 deg out.

Just found this on an older post about a 2.5na and timing problems...

your doing it wrong, this is an easy job when you know how!!

look on ALL THREE pulleys, you will see a little tiny dot stamped into them. Line these up with the arrows. thats it! The woodruff key method is WRONG for this engine.

Hope this is right...:(

Any further thoughts on this? Anyone done a belt on a 2.5 na? Took push rods out last night and four are badly bent... just hope valves survived!!!

valves should have ,flt wheel slot should line up ,but not guarrenteed and there is sometimes more than i slot as flywheel fitted a few tpyes of engine timing can be done with lining each pulley with its respective arrow crank when right will have key way 108 degrees before tdc as unlike tdi these are timed at exhaust peak no1 which is about 8 oclock as looking straight on,cam timing is critical and if cant get perfect go for slightly advanced( clockwise) fuel pump is on slotted holes which if 13mm spanner size bung removed front side of pump using torch if no pin available you can see disc with slot in edge this should line up with hole

I lined each sprocket up with the arrow and put a small dot of red paint right at the top of the sprocket , when all three where done i fitted the belt . I checked the alignment by photographing the arrow on each sprocket as they are difficult to see clearly. Engine started first time and has done 3000 miles since
