I just got a recon transfer box fitted by my mechanic. It is whining. the mechanic said it might pass as the recon box might be 'tight' and may need to wear in. Is this possible?

Symptoms:

Whines at higher speeds, but only after a few minutes of warming up
With clutch depressed or in neutral or both it still whines at speed - only quits if I put the diff selector gear lever in neutral while driving.

Em probably not the reply I was expecting. Supplier has asked me to run it for 500 miles, as has another helpful chap on here via mail. The noise is not getting worse at this stage, but it is annoying. Oil is correct - EP90 and it's definitely fitted correctly by dealership mechanics - I purchased unit directly from supplier.

hi check the 2 bolts in the front of the t/box where it bolts to the main box as these 2 are short bolts opposed to the others that are long if hes put the wrong bolts in they are too long and are hard against the intermediate gear causing a whine would also explain why quiet in neutrel

usually if the wrong bolts are fitted then it locks the trans really quite tight defo notice it when installation. Worth checking but I wouldn't think so. you have had so many transfer boxes its getting silly. You need to get this sorted. Also don't assume cos they are Techs they are good one local to me did a nice job on a defender managed to cock it up big stylee. alot of qualified mechanics are just fitters and do very little more. Also makes me suspicious is some of the advice they gave you like fitting front correction bushes and fitting and not checking propshaft lengths if they are able to compress and extend.
