Series 2 New style series 2a axle stubs combined with older parts?

G'day folks,

Does any one know how compatible the new style axle stubs are with the older series 2a parts?

The older version has a nice brass bushing (which is now worn) where the inner drive shaft fits through the axle stub. The new version does not have this.

On the other side of the stub there is a replaceable distance piece (which is mentioned in the green book) - doesn't exist on the new version - all made as one.

Am I going to get trouble in the future with the combination of new and old parts?

Is it worth getting an older bushing and machining space for it in the new stub axle?

I've figured out that the left hand one is actually the post '81 version. This is now being sold as a replacement for the early type. From what I've read so far it isn't...

...I've found the brass bushes for the older type but then you need a hand ream which costs a flipping fortune...
 
Last time I checked the later model stub axle was hugely more expensive than the earlier type. I paid about £200 each for mine 3-4 years ago when only genuine ones were available as spares. A seal fits in the newer one where you see the brass bush in the older one. I think the wheel bearings were a different size on later models but not sure if that means the stub axle is a different size or if the actual hub is of a different dimension.

I'm struggling to think why it needs a brass bush ... Nothing runs on it does it?
