As I sit and type this post, my independent engineer is inspecting the below 2004 (54) Range Rover 3.0 TD6 Vogue I am thinking of buying.

As a potentially new Range Rover owner and complete DIY novice I thought i'd come and say Hello.

If everything goes ok with this inspection the car will be coming with a LR select warranty. Does anyone know anything about this warranty other than what i've been told by the dealer?

Due to my lack of mechanical knowledge (hence the engineer) I have been looking at warranties and have landed at 'warranty wise' whose policy looks quite attractive. I understand that the Platinum level includes all electrical and mechnical parts and other items What's Covered Platinum | Platinum Cover Level Car Warranty

This looks great on paper but I wonder if anyone has had any experience of them? I know this is a 'new product' based on previous complaints of it being unclear and people not getting paid out.

Also, does anyone know of a good, honest independent LR specialist in or near to Southport who uses LR/OEM parts and who doesn't use patented rubbish?

Anyways guys (gals?), from reading through the forums it looks like I could be a regular so once again Hello!

All i know is you will need a QUALITY warranty with it.In the unlikelyhood of you not needeing to claim it is worth its money for peace of mind . Seriously good luck with it and you will enjoy it when its running good.:welcome2:

I've had the results of my engineers report back and just thought i'd gauge what you guys think about me potentially buying it e.g. should this be one I walk away from?

  • Small rust spot on the roof's leading edge;
  • Windscreen seal slightly out of position;
  • Securing clip missing from boot trim panel;
  • Plastic cover missing from front towing hoop (I have wondered, based on what's listed below, if it has spent some time being towed);
  • Paintwork would benefit from a good wash and polish;
  • Oil and filter change overdue;
  • Fuel filter appeared quite old;
  • Battery became flat during the inspection (alternator checked ok at 14.25v);
  • None of the cigarette lighters operated;
  • Fault code in air suspesion system (CAN BUS FAULT) which would not clear, however, suspension appeared to be working correctly;
  • Rear cross-member bushes were showing signs of deterioration;
  • Front brake discs becoming worn;
  • Security wheel nut adaptor missing;
  • Noise coming from lower central windscreen area which got worse with increased road speed
I'm going to discuss this more fully with the engineer tomorrow to gauge his expert opinion. However, i'd be grateful to hear your opinions seeing as you guys know about the llittle signs which show something big coming along AND would be grateful if someone could advise of the real world costs associated with getting these things rectified!

Thanks in advance.

The most important thing is whether it's had the front diff recall (i.e. to fit a flexible coupling) I wouldn't touch a L322 with the original front diff setup.

Rust on roof? for that alone, turn around and do a runner, the fact the seal is misaligned - too many questions there....
It clearly has electrical problems (very bad start...)
Fault codes up....
I think this is the one you use as a benchmark on price.
Look at as many as you can, it sounds daft but if you look at a dozen, you will get a feel for the right one.
Best of luck and start saving for repairs, but as stated, when running, you will forgive it anything!

And that's an 'Engineers report'??? :hysterically_laughi:hysterically_laughi Most of it is just covering his arse and justifying his bill.

I'm not convinced a Rangie is for you mate, reccon you'd be better off with a ****ing Prius :D

That's not all of it, the actual report is 16 pages long!

Nah, don't fancy a Prius but wouldn't mind hearing why you think I should get one! Lol!

I'm quite happy with the report, i'm not quite sure why there is such negativity being shown towards it. It has discovered faults that I could not have done on my restricted test drive. In fact, he discovered that the oil and filter need replacing as well as the fuel filter - i'd been told by the dealership that the car had been serviced, clearly not! I also could not have found the CAN BUS FAULT as I don't have the equipment.

Ah well, you can't please all of the people all of the time!

I'm sorry but short of having a date stamp on the filters Or been an obselete brand. There is no way anyone can say how long a filter has been on a car..

I think its safe to say though, that you can tell the difference between a filter that has been fitted and the car hasn't been driven since or a filter that has done umpteen miles! Even my lack of knowledge can tell the difference (if I was allowed to check it)!

That is a pretty concise report. Dare I ask who the seller is. I work in the motor trade and might be able to point you in the direction of others within your budget.

I dont think this is the one for you.If possible you need to find one with one or two owners and with no expense spared on it with a load of reciepts for every service or repair.:(

There are plenty of these coming onto the market, so no need to rush into something. Do as the guys are saying, walk away, if it don't seem right, why buy into it, use this as a learning experience and the asking price as a benchmark.

Shop around and be prepared to travel and you should fine just what you're looking for instead of rushing headlong into buying one of the first few you find. Anyone here will tell you, buy a car with more history than you can ever read, without it the car could cost you big bucks in no time at all.

Another thing, Rangies are already attracting the seasonal 'snow tax' premium, you might want to wait until spring and buy cheaper and use the time to do some more research.
