Right well. After having a disco for surf trips and geting rid at the end of 08 I have been after another landy for a while. This has been a nigalley itch that turned into a painfull yurning after seting about getingworks old 110 threw it's mot. Wilst winging about not having the cash to go and by one a frend sead he had a s3 109 mod 24v radio pickup going beging at thefarm. £30 later it is mine. Going to pick up on Tuesday ( I think) naw £30 good will jesture sounds cheep but it's last mot was 98 we think and it hasnot moved for the last 4 of thows years. I work as a welder and my machanics ain't that bad so I am confident I can get it back on the road over the next year. My dramer is it's thirst for fuel. 200 mile surftrips most weekends at 12 mpg would kill me if the lass doesn't when I bring my new toy home. So I'm thinking of an engion swop for somthing moor frugal. Wot are my options. Was thinking an old nissan van engion but I don't know why I think that. Any real comon conversions? Idearley the engion would cost buttons to so no big v8's if thay fit or disirabal jag Moters. I don't mind having a top speed of 55-60 mph but would love to see +30 mpg on a fast a road run or maby even a moterway. Any advice welcome regards the landrover. And if I am overley optamistic let me know why. Tar

200Tdi :)

Find a old discovery scrapper, rip engine and bits out you need, sell the parts off it (You would probably get back what you paid for it if you don't mind the hassle). Maybe even fit the Diffs...

As you are a welder fabricating the exhaust will be no problem. It is a well worth and well documented engine conversion.

Good luck and don't forget to put pictures of it up here when you get it :)

i intend to treat hear as a kind of mentoure and shoulder to cry on so will keep you all well informed :D
any other engion choices? i don't have the room for 3 cars you see. wots a 200 tdi engion go for?

If you're looking for 30mpg don't buy a heavy unaerodynamic 4wd!
I'm not saying it can't be done, but you've got your work cut out.

ok thats fare enough. so mabey i wont hit 30 mpg but one can hope. of the engions i can chose from, witch ther must be moor than one (200 tdi) there must be some moor frougal than others.

wot deturmins weather an engion will work or not? power output, size and the abilatey to attach it to the gear box must be some factors. i gess most engions can be mounted to a landrover shacey with some modifacation due to its simple as form.

i realy dont get the whole gearbox and transfur box bit. wot engions fit to a landrover gear box and wot engion and gear box combowes fit to a landrover trancfur box? (if that makes sense spelt like that) and then there is the high range low range bit

so 200 tdi? is the cheepest way? because it is the simpalist? do you need so mutch of the 200 tdi it is cheeper to just bye a scrapper? if that is the way then who am i to dis agree. do you change the whole drive train over to the axel aswell? or props

Unless you like restoring dead landies weigh it in and spend the money you would have poured into it on a disco or suchlike. 600 quid or so will get you a reasonable, mot'd disco 1 and you'll be away to the beach next weekend, not swearing at a pile of rust.

it is kind of that bit that i will like i think. it is not stopping me surfing not having a landrover i dont mind driving over in my car and do most weeks but i miss my disco cos you could sleep in it. would like to spend the next year or so getting it on the road again. i know it is a hole other animal to a comfey disco but i have driven a s2 and drive an old 110 for work and look forward to its rugged charm. noor do i need to cross the himolayers or maroco. a sunday greenlain with a picnick in north wales would be nice or beeing able to get that bit closer to the boulder when climbing in the lakes.

Fair enough good luck with it then. I prefer a van for surf trips tbh specially as it mostly takes place in the winter. Gettin changed outside sucks, as does strappin boards to the roof after a sesh.

the smalest board in my quiver is a 7.6 funboard. most of the time i ride a 9.6 longboard. i would have to change my life if i wonted to ride a shortey and fit it in a vehical. lol get all pumped up before a surf...

just spotted where you are. if you wake up on saterday and the wind is not blowing its nuts of you should come to hells mouth. i will be in a old red e30 bmw :)

Me and my lad ride longboards too. The waves have been ****e round here this year so far. I keep an eye on the forecasts every day but busy saturday this week so couldn't surf even if it was epic. I'm sure our paths will cross in the water sometime post up on here if you're going.

Then you will have a pm most weekends LOL. Also I find magic to be wrong alot with wind. West coast oftern say it is going to be flat when the best swells of the year come in to try and keep the beatch quiat. If everyware says ace surf and west coast say it is poo then make the effat. Have fun.

Think I have a 200 tdi engion. Very cheep but no cerial number so...... It is of a man I trust but I don't know the dood he got it from.

All the forecasts seem to have become unreliable this year. I check msw but also check the atlantic charts and make my own mind up. www.xcweather.co.uk is useful for what is actualy happening at the beach, though I'm near enough to the anglesey beaches to just go and have a look. The txt message grapevine usually flags it up if anything unexpected sneaks in. tbh anything we get in the summer is a bonus, winter is the time.

your not rong about winter. yesterday and two sats ago have been rather ace mind. solid 3 foot and cleen. like glass two weeks ago. this will all end soom though i have no dawt. see you soon a.

I thought about fitting a 200tdi but am now going to fit an lpg system to my 109 pickup. I get 15-20 mpg as it stands and as lpg is less than half price it doubles yer miles to the pound if not yer mpg. I also intend to fit a Turner gas flowed head which I believe makes a big difference to the standard petrol engine in power and mpg.

well dam. the thing fell threw. i went to pick up today. admitedley a bit late but i have been mad bissey and wots a cupple of weeks after 10 years? well ill tell you. it is to long. the landy went for skrap a few days ago and wher it stood is the footings for his new sheds.
the dood very happaly gave me the £30 back and not threw pay pall so i have lost nothing. but naw.........
i need to find a series landrover. dont need an mot and must require work. ish????????
