hi, i'm seriously considering buying a Defender 90, i'd like to know what the difference in perfomance is between the new 6 speed and the old Td5 and what year they changed from 4 rear seats to foward facing 2, 07?, which looks less efficiant on space, as i need to carry 2 kids, wife and dog.

any advise please?

07 model year, so could be late 2006, but I doubt it. They accelerate a lot better but are limited on top speed (about 84, fast enough on beam axles?)
The seating layout is down to changes in the law for new vehicles, so nothing LR could do about it.

New one is far better on the road than the TD5's as the 6th gear means you can hold a conversation with passengers at 70mph without shouting! Very low 1st gear means a change to 2nd as soon as you get going but apart from that it's better. Nicer dashboard, better engine - about 25% more torque for same BHP. If you do longer road journeys it is a lot nicer.

I wondered how long you would take.
Can't comment on the gearbox, but we've not had any problems. I'm 6ft and find it perfectly comfortable, so at least half your post is crap.

"and the gearbox is made from Dairylea
and if you're over 5ft 6", you can't fit in the cab."

Rubbish, no problems on fitting in cab, on the gearbox front I had a new TD5 in 1999 and it was on its third gearbox under warranty when it was sold in 2001 - always going to be problems with Land Rovers I am afraid whether it's a 200 Tdi or a Puma.

My 99 TD5 was 10 years ago, What do you guys call new? the invention of the spinning wheel? Nothing wrong with older Landys at all but the Puma is an improvement - after driving mine for 3 months it is definitely better than the 3 "old" Defenders I had before it.

:welcome: to LZ :)

Time to step in & mention the rather excellent Freelander methinks. Once chipped the Td4 offers both reasonable performance & good economy.
Win-Win situation eh folks:D:D:D
