Disco 300 failed MOT on rear number plate a few days ago, digits not tall enough on the rear plate (new rule is 79mm). Car passed OK last year but apparently law changed earlier this year. Only bikes and certain imports are allowed to have smaller (65mm).

So, off I trot and get a new plate made up, standard rectangle 11" x 8", and I thought we'd have us a nice St George cross too, down the left hand side.

Collect new number plate and guess what? Letters are STILL too small. The reason? Putting the flag in down the left hand side, the computer has to reduce the lettering in size to fit. Supplier was very nice about it and made me a correct replacement, for free etc.

So, if anyone is getting an 11" x 8" rear number plate made up. DO NOT put in a flag, Euro symbol, footy team or whatever, otherwise your digits might come out too small, and thus fail your next MOT. I got round it by getting a wider plate made, which gave room for the flag.

new rules only apply to number plates fitted since 2001.
what year is your disco?

It was a fair cop, (not getting into whether the rules are fair ... ;))

I rang VOSA, any number plate even if its pre 2001 vehicle must be 79mm. The only difference is post 2001 plate is allowed narrower letters (50mm), whereas prior to that your allowed 64mm character width.

And its the date of fitment of the plate, not the year of the car.

The rule was actually introduced the year before, but then VOSA temporarily suspended it, following lots of complaints. But earlier this year the check was re-introduced in the MOT

Rules ok but the MOT man must have been a proper arsehole to fail it on that one.

TBH thats exactly what I thought ;). Its not like I'm a stranger to him either.

I wondered perhaps if they'd had the inspectorate sniffing round lately, making sure they were sticking to "ze rules" correctly.

Well any decent supplier should have know that an 11x8 with a flag is illegal needs to be at least 11 3/4 x 8 1/2. Sounds like the sytem they use isnt very good.
