Hello All. New member here. Pleased to meet you all and look forward to posting moving forward.

Some help would be much appreciated. I own a Discovery 2 TD5 and have just limped back home after experiencing a few problems. I was driving the car at around 80 on the motorway. There was a sudden loss of power in 5th and then into 4th as I slowed down. At the same time a large amount of white smoke started to blow out of the back of the car. About 20 seconds later there was a loud bang and the white smoke turned black. I pulled onto the hard shoulder and stopped the vehicle, keeping the engine running. I then set off at a slow pace (20-25 mph) (being only 5 miles from home I figured I could make it back). The turbo and power seems to be restored, and the smoke is now barely noticeble. The Disco turns over when started and there are no warning lights on the dash. No fluid seems to have been dropped on the floor underneath the car, so I am not sure what the problem can be. I am due to drive the car a distance tomorrow, but am loath to do so should I end up making what might be a minor issue a lot worse.

Can any one shed some light on what the problem might be. To summarise: loss of power, lots of white smoke, a big bang, followed by lots of black smoke.

Many thanks in advance to those who might be able to offer some advice.

The bang you are talking about, are we talking physical bang on sound bang as per a backfire?

This is only a thought, if the vehicle has a partial fuel blockage which cleared suddenly the sudden no fuel/fuel scenario could cause a backfire. The white smoke may be just be a lack of fuel, diesels do funny things when there are blockages or air.

The black smoke could have been a shed load of soot in the exhaust which brings you to think perhaps and exhaust obstruction.

I have seen this on many petrol cars when the CAT fails and starts to block the exhaust gases which can ignite as they backup in the system, the BANG clears all but only for a few miles.

I am unsure if your car has a CAT, others on here have knowledge about these cars and they may chip in.

Another thing is does your car have a ECU that alters the diesel tiiming? Bringing us round robin to a backfire.

This is the only thing I could think of and as there were no other offers it will help keep the thread up front.

Let us know,

regards

Dave

Hello Dave. Thanks for taking the time to reply. Much Appreciated. The car went in for repairs yesterday and the fault was diagnosed pretty quickly. The intercooler hose had 'imploded', this in turn causing the blockage in the pipe which led to the loss of power and the loud pop. A new intercooler hose has been fitted and all is back to normal.

Its good to hear that it was easy to fix, and the fact that you have given feedback to the forum will go a long way to helping others.

I for one had not thought about the turbo pipe.

Expensive week Land Rover wise. As well as a new turbo pipe, the front passenger window needed repairing (motor not working) and a new rear tailgate lock needed fitting. Combined with 12 months tax and a 60k service I have had to shell out £900. Still, could have been worse, though my funds for a stage 2 remap have been wiped out in a stroke. Guess I will have to start saving again.
