Dear All,

A couple of weeks back a bought a 4.6 hse, it was reasonably cheap so I thought id have a look. It looked a little tired but the paint and bodywork were good and it had the air suspension changed to coils etc. I made him an offer and he accepted, telling me it was fine and also having described the car as immaculate!!!

It also had 14 stamps, but needed a service, it was running a little lumpy but not overheating and was returning about 16 mpg stop start.

However, today, I took it to the local landy garage to have a look at as some smoke was coming from behind and it was down on power and a strong smell of petrol.

So, we know where this is going!!

They said they had seen the car a few weeks back, after both headgaskets had gone, and basically told me Id been done and it needed a new engine!

So this guy has knowingly sold me a car with a duff engine....

Anyhow, I need some advide on what to do. Should I cut my losses and sell it as spares? I dont have 4k for a engine, or even 1200 for a recon.

Or could i find a cheap secong hand one, but im not sure how much labour woul be involved in removing and fitting a new one.

So there we have it... Im not a complete numpty when it comes to cars, I had no idea the head gaskets were shot, as there was no real loss of water, overheating or steam from the exhaust....

I was looking forward to being a landy owner, but i dont wnat to throw more bad money after bad!!

Many thanks chaps

PS I texted the guy expressing my disgust... selling as sold as seen is one thing, but knowingly selling that the engine is shot is disgusting in my book.

where abouts are ya? what year is it?

the block could be warped

a second hand engine out of a crashed motor(rear end) would be your best bet, if you are out my way i could lend a hand fitting it

See... I told ya :D:D:D

Evenin my wunderfull guys :)

wow thanks for the replies guys, I dont think he will take it back, its too good to scrap or break, bar the air con it all works.

The garage says the block could be warped, it still runs and drives ok, ive done 400 miles in it so far, and it was only today that it really went nuts.

Thanks for the offer g man, id live to be able to replace an engine, what sort of labour would it be for a garage? I might try an source a second hand one?

where about are ya!!! a garage will charge about 5 or 6 hrs labour depending on what they feel like, so say 6hrs @ £60 per hour plus consumables so about £500 plus the price of the engine if you find a garage that will do it

righty, you need to know the problem before you go getting upset!

i would strip the heads off and then see how the land(y) lies. pardon the feeble pun!

with the heads off, take some detailed piccys of each pot and corresponding plug (you can do plugs first if you want, this may give us all a clue to the problem)

lets face it, you will have to strip it to sell it as bits so may as well start at the front!!!

number everything, make notes of where things came from etc. masking tape is good for this. keep all the items in the correct order so they can go back in the same order!

once heads are off and piccys taken and posted we can then discuss your options, its only about half a days work to this point if you knock about a bit and dont be scared to take bits off!

if its the block then its gonna cost!! if not then its relatively cheap!

also, put your location in and maybe your close enough for one of us to have a look for ya and help determine the problem!
