Newbie here with a problem...any help is appreciated. My 1999 D110 has just had its head gasket replaced and the mechanic is having problems re-starting. The fuel injector solenoids do not appear to be operating and letting fuel into the injectors, although we can make the engine run by spraying starter fluid into the intake. Since we don't have the software here in the States for the diesels, we cannot use Rovacom to look for a fault. Since the engine ran fine before the teardown, we suspect the ECU sees some kind of a fault or the anti-theft is engaged. The red light for the security system goes out when the key is turned to II, so that seems OK. Is there a way to clear faults by jumpering the OBD connector, like in Range Rovers? If so, how? Any other suggestions welcome.

Have the injectors been put back in the correct places? They are coded to the cylinder that they were removed from.

Have you checked the fuel cut off switch?

Purged the fuel gallery in the head?
Checked the injector loom under the rocker cover?
Adjusted the injector rockers? They will need doing even if you did not remove the shaft or injectors because the head gasket thickness has an effect on clearances.

We have done the standard fuel purge and fuel is present at the injector solenoids but not entering the injectors since the solenoids are not firing. Is there a special method of purging the fuel gallery, other than just getting the fuel pump to pressurize the system by cranking the engine and operating the throttle?

Injectors and wire loom look good. New fuel injector rocker parts all adjusted per the book. Fuel cut off switch?...not sure where this is or what you are referring to. Do you mean the one where the fuel filter is (on the chassis)? I don't think it's been touched but will double check. Thanks for the ideas.

Just turn the key to position two and you will hear the fuel pump running it will stop after about two minutes. Try to start her then if it still wont go try again but let the pump run three or four times before attempting to start it. I changed the fuel filter last month had to let the pump run six times before it fired up was about to give in. Hope this helps

Thanks slim jim, I have been through this before changing fuel filters and it does take a while for the air to be purged.

Once again ......

Turn on IGN key till the dash lights show. From now on LEAVE IT ON.

Listen for fuel pump running. With any luck it will be whining and making sloshing sounds.

When it stops LEAVE THE IGN KEY ON, and tramp the gas pedal to the floor and up FIVE times. The pump will start again.

Every time the pump stops, keep doing this till the whining sloshing noises suddenly get a lot less - then do it three or four times more just to be sure the whole system is flooded with nice fuel and purged of nasty air.

PRAY.

Now hold the gas pedal hard to the floor and turn the key to STARTER for up to 30 seconds. If it starts let the throttle up immediately. If it doesn't start "We have a problem Houston".

Thanks for the suggestions, but it doesn't appear to be a fuel problem. We have fuel at the injectors but no signal or ground from the ECU is coming to fire the injectors. We suspect the security system might be prohibiting this but the vehicle locks and unlocks correctly and the alarm light on the speedo goes on and off as it should. The injectors are in the correct cylinders and the wire loom looks good (and worked fine previously). We just can't seem to get the ECU to talk to the injectors. We are really stumped!!!

have you done the basics, like checked the wiring for continuity from the ECU to the injector, and checked that the ECU is getting its power correctly? I don't really know how the TD5 se4curity works, but i THINK (and am probably wrong) that i have read somewhere that the alarm system and the engine are run by different ECU's?

Yes, the wiring is continuous and the ECU is getting power and functioning. I'll have to investigate what runs the security...that's a new one on me.
