New Engine Needed!

My 2000 model P38 4.6 V8 has a cracked block!

So, the garage that I use and trust suggest a short engine.

They say the heads are fine and have had them looked at at the place that they get them skimmed at.

So, any advice would be appreciated.

Also, who is the best on price for supplying the engine that I need.

What should I be paying for this?

RPI list a short engine at £2250
Turner Engineering is Similarly Priced
V8Tuners have a top hatted Short for £2500
Rimmers is pushing £3000

Which ever you choose, make sure it is a top hatted short, the last thing you want is to have top hat issues....

By top hatted, I presume you mean the liners with the flanged tops?

This is going to cost me dearly whichever way I go isn't it!
Yep flanged liners....

Unfortunatly so....that is just to buy the short engine, you then have the labour to take out the old engine, strip it, refit the heads, ancilliaries, pipe it up, fluids, get it running etc.....

If you are handy with the spanners and have the time, it will save you a fortune to fit it yourself.....

You could be looking at a bill of £5k to do the work (that includes the engine btw)....you can pick up a 2000/2001 P38 4.6 for that cash...but you won't know the history....

or a reliable breakers £1000 pounds with a 3 month warranty, and then you have spare heads you can get the block checked before fitting .

This is why I stick with the 88mm bore engines.

Sorry it happened to you though mate, lets hope you can find a cheap answer.

If it wasnt already in bits I would say k seal it and put it on ebay, even at a loss it would save you cash lol

Good luck and welcome to the short block club :) On a positive note mine has run without any issues for 2 years since a recon swap.

I'm staggered at the price of top-hat short blocks, surely it's a case of obtaining an old block, a bit of machining and eight new top-hat liners? Is it a case of lack of competition driving up prices?

In the old days I used to have engines modified in similar ways, the costs were trivial in comparison.

Thanks for the advice everyone.

As I am into 100's whichever way I go, I decided to get a short engine from Turner Engineering.

Just ordered it! Painful!

I'll update on here to let you know how it goes.

I went for a Turner replacement when my 2000 V8 went the same way! Total bill including the engine came to around £5500, but I'm very happy with the result :D What a difference - just goes to show how poor the old engine was!

Hope it all goes well for you.

I ordered a short block with hydraulic lifter kit, oil pump and front cover kit from Turner Engineering on Tuesday on an exchange basis.

The old block goes back in the same box and pallet that the new one was delivered on.

It came the day after at 11.30am - wow!

Hope to take some photographs as the job progresses, the garage is only 100m from my house.
