Hi all
looks like my P38 4.6 has a porous block and it seems the cure is a new engine .
whats the best way to go ?
second hand engine
reconditioned engine
brand new engine - although I have heard you cant buy them new anymore.

As i live in worcester park can anyone recommend anyone within reasonable distance, and finally how much should it cost to supply and fit an engine and is there a website out there that sells these engine so I can have a browse

many thanks

Phil

you mean cracked ,iwould get top hat linered block and fit new pistons etc ,but maybe get short motor and swap your bits over or stripped motor if you think heads are ****ed ,much easier to fit with heads off

I have just rebuilt my p38 engine 4.6 v8 as it had the same problem as yours! I got my new block with flanged liners from Automotive Component Remanufacturing Ltd. They were fantastic! had my old heads reskimmed used old pistons. You will need to replace all seals in block and engine.
Good luck and take your time...

that wouldnt mean too much as i have found alot of cracked blocks but 1 liner moved, except for a company who did blocks that liners moved on through **** poor machining

Bought a new 4.6 short engine a few years ago from Autopost in London..I think they have moved since but still in the Home Counties. Has been trouble free since the day it was fitted 70000 miles ago.

When I had my 3.9 Classic, I bought a new short engine from RPI in Norwich and that was also trouble free and lasted for years, was still going strong after I sold the car.

Would have no hesitation in recommending both suppliers

head gaskets are fine so am now in a quandary,
from turner engineering - short block + additional bits £2500 + VAT
- full engine + additional bits £ 3000 + VAT
turner also want old engine in exchange

Autopost engineering - short block £1950 + VAT
- Full engine £ 3500 + VAT
they dont want old engine
both do 12 months warranty but turner give extra 2 years on block not leaking

my rangie has LPG so if I go down full engine route wil need to get LPG fitted
if I use short block can in theory use own heads

any views??

yes use your own heads, just get them skimmed first..

I advise not to get the heads skimmed just for the sake of it.

Get the local engineering company to blue a surface plate and check them first for flatness. Will take them all of 10 minutes max. to do both. Only get them skimmed if they are warped and then only get the bare amount taken off.

And take a packet of Jammie Dodgers with you !!!!!

do you mean full engine or long engine 3000 seems very cheap for a full engine,if its a long engine you will have to reuse your own inlet and exhaust manifolds,if so there should be no problems with your lpg as its fitted to the inlet manifold or just swap the inlet over if its a full engine simples:D

Hi, i had number two liner go in my 4.6, i ended up getting a Cos-cast block from RPI engineering, arrived within 24hrs and i had a different camshaft fitted before dispatch, it was a short engine but had new crank, conrods, pistons and a gasket set to go with it, price was £3k delivered, very pleased with there product and service, have some pics of old and new blocks the quality difference is amazing, will se if i can upload.
