Hi guys, I need to change the front brakes on my 2002 facelift Disco Td5. Garage quoted £210.

Having a quick look on ebay, I found several sets for around £65 delivered:
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&item=150178500288£54 + £9 p&p
£53.50 + £9 p&p
£50 + £15 p&p

Is the £210 truly extortionate then, or are the ebay sets crap? I can't do it myself - I don't have the tools or the ability, so am I better getting the kit myself and paying a garage to fit? How much is a reasonable fitting charge?

Many thanks :)

Just a thought if i remember correctly don't kwick fit do them with lifetime guarantee might be worth getting a quote

Found some cheaper ones here from MM Independent Land Rover Specialists:
Front Disc and Pad Kit Discovery TD5 4 0
£55 delivered.

I haven't found any quite as cheap as the ones you saw though, robint!
Tony S - just looked on kwikfit's website, and the lifetime guarantee is only on the pads, not the discs, so not sure it'd be worth their (probable) extortionate prices, but it's worth a phonecall, thanks :)

vivnap - mine are the vented ones, but looks like I can get my set for £45 delivered from that site, so getting better all the time - thanks!
BRAKEKIT5 Front Discs and Pads Kit - Disco 2

EDIT:
Just found this:
Mail Order 4x4 Discovery 2 Brake Kits (Pads & Discs)

BRAKEKIT25 Disco 2 Front Pad & Disc Kit From 3A Onwards
Price: £35.73 (Excluding VAT at 15%)
This kit includes: 2x ANR4582 Front Brake Discs and 1x SFP000210M Mintex brake pads.

BRAKEKIT5 Disco 2 Front Pad & Disc Kit Up To 2A999999
Price: £34.50 (Excluding VAT at 15%)
This kit includes: 2x SDB000380 Front Brake Discs and 1x SFP100480 Mintex brake pads.

And my VIN number appears to be 3A onwards, so looks like I need to be a bit more careful about which ones I get. Strange, cos most sites just said the SDB000380 discs... Will keep on digging... :D

It really is pretty easy to do if you have some decent tools...

If not, the garage will be buying the stuff cheaper (or at least as cheap) than you can - so just go to an independant mechanic who specialises in LR's and haggle hard! I wouldn't think that buying pads & disks elsewhere would save you any cash (plus if you have a problem after a few weeks, the dealer will wiggle out of any warranty probably because he didn't supply the parts - you only paid him for labour - not the whole job)...

I did the front pads & disks, and a full fluid change in a saturday morning (~3 hours) without rushing...

Thanks MartinK :) I really should be able to change the pads - I used to work in Girlings making the big truck hydraulic caliper assemblies, lol!! But it's been so long now, and I don't have a tidy jack, or a level area, or stuff like that, and to be honest, I wouldn't trust my inexperience on something this safety critical.

At least I know now that the whole set is available for less than £50, and labour should be what, £50? so I've PM'd Clutchdust on here, and I'll give the alternative local garage a call too. It looks like the £210 I was first quoted is well OTT though, and I should hopefully be able to get it all done for around a ton :) That is a good point about getting someone to do the whole job, in case they complain my parts are not good!

Hi there, you may find that no garage will fit the parts if you buy them, as they will have to take responsibility for the work afterwards.

If you have any mates who could do the job for you you could save a packet. Here's a set of respectable brake parts which just need fitting:

Good luck
