oh - and as Sean sez - the search engine seems to have some weird flaws in it that seem to ignore things at times! - any ideas on this one Accy?

Just a quick thought, i may sound a little stupid but bare with me, iv'e just done a double shift and i'm stuffed!. It seems as though one of the biggest concerns would be with the usefull thread getting filled up with drivell. i'm sure some people enjoy the banter but in this section i think it would be imprtant to just leave the details. I could give a few of the regulars the ability to moderate posts just in this section for now, With a view to eventually give each section a mod. Having moderators is something that i've been wanting to get round to for a long time but it can get quite difficult. On other sites ive had numerous blow outs caused by mods. The problem often being that someone is too strong minded on one oppinion and i think you really have to bite your tongue (or fingers) sometimes. However i do think its time to get it sorted, the site is getting very busy, Roy is dead i think and i'm often away without net access. Maybe this is the ideal time/ opertunity to try it out.

I'm waffling now but i think you get my drift. I know there's been a couple of you asked in the past but if anybody wants to help then send me a pm.

I think yu need to differentiate between threads and posts - useful posts - yes - but whole threads - yu will only get peeps repeat posting "I dont intend to read the whole thread of 45 pages but....."

I agree - you often find the 'gem' hidden away in a long thread & many people can't be bothered to read it all - but the only way to solve this is if someone who knows where this 'gem' is puts a link to the relevant POST - can this be done - can you link to a certain post in a long thread ?

- yep - gives nothing for 'veg oil' but 10 threads with over 500 posts for 'vegoil' - where are the 'gems' on all those 500 posts - cos there's a lot of waffle in there as well. - oh & don't get anything for 'egr' but lots for 'egr blanking':confused:

yep;)

If it int bust don't mend it. The problem with other sites is too many Sub forums, which make it tedious for catching up. the only problem with LZ is what also, in my opinion makes it the bestest, and that is the deviation from the point in the original post, while it makes it confusing for newbies it also make it entertaining for the rest of us. If you start making stuff sticky where do you stop and how long do you keep it sticky.

Sorry if any of this has bin covered but I ant got time to read all the thread an felt like putting my two pennorth in.

Best way is to keep the moderators incognito too.

Before any big changes are made it might be worth revisiting how the search function is configured on here - vbulletin (on which this place is based) has a number of options which may require revision now that the connect is growing

if anyone is having trouble sleeping the docs are here

vBulletin Manual

i'm convinced that if search did work as it should then it'd not matter if every thread did eventually go off on a tangent

according to the manual the search default minimum value is four characters, so that'd explain why bugger all is found when searching for veg oil or any other 3 letter word

I agree it should , but when searching u will try any option to find what ur after

nope - what actually happens is people give up with the search and start a new thread asking a question thats been covered a zillion times before

as accy said, i thing moderators are the way forward. they could edit the crud from posts, or maybe just start a new thread any copy/paste the good data in and loose the original post.

as for the veg oil post, it is very rare and search engine (except google, yahoo etc) will alow three letter words as a three letter word is contained inside alot of other words, where as a string or four letters is les likly to bring up a false word.

the search engine is programed to see words as a sting of letters, therefor usually if u search with a short abreviation (pertol), it should pull the full word (Petrolium) in the results too.

it had been decided by the internet gods that 4 letters is the best compromise. unfortunatly, from what i have seen, vbuilliten doesnt support "quoted" words. if it did a search containing quotes, ie "veg oil" would yeild results, as its searching to that exact phrase veg(space)oil, more than 4 letters. but this wouldnt pull and results for vegitable oil, as this wouldnt match.

bla bla bla

search engines.....

wheres my pint.

PS, another option could be only one area to to post for this catergry, and the good posts, with the relivent info then get filed by only the admins moderators. just like a big suggestion box, we dump them, u sort them.

to the pub.........

complete bollocks, what had you been on to come up with that nonsense ?

The minimum and maximum length of words to be indexed is defined by the ft_min_word_len and ft_max_word_len system variables (available as of MySQL 4.0.0). The default minimum value is four characters. The default maximum depends on your version of MySQL. If you change either value, you must rebuild your FULLTEXT indexes. For example, if you want three-character words to be searchable, you can set the ft_min_word_len variable by putting the following lines in an option file:

[mysqld]
ft_min_word_len=3

so who would you think would do this "job" then - cos if it's not done right it's gonne mess up a good forum

it's not broke (other than the search being a bit iffy) so stop trying to fix it
