Just a quick one people. Fitted a new battery to the D3. Do I need to reset any settings with the GAP iid ?.
Thanks.

No just fit it and dont worry.

D4 is totally different and has to be told what type of battery has been fitted.

It has but as the d3 battery is lead acid no worries, d4 can have lead acid or agm (stop/start I think?) hence the need to tell it whats what, as agm wont take the higher volatge a lead acid one will.
Smart alternators I've seen will up the output to compensate for older, dying batteries. They need to be told it's a new battery do the charge profile resets, thus not cooking a new healthy battery

The ECM is able to determine the state of the battery, new or old, simply because it only uses a standard lead acid.
So all it needs is a replacement battery, then the ECM will test its function over the next few miles, and tell the alternator to charge accordingly. ;)

I think the audis are like that, I have also changed a few batteriss on them, just straight swapping they were fine all the time we had the cars.

Obviously the D3 isn't as smart as I gave it credit for:eek:.
Still everyday a school day:).

It's pretty clever, as the ECM can read the battery voltage drop off when an electric load is applied, so can calculate its actual capacity.
Obviously when an old battery is replaced by a new battery, the voltage drop under load is less, so the ECM tells the alternator to charge accordingly.

Ok it's not a true smart system, but it's far from a dumb system. ;)
