Ok so I need to upgrade my speakers in my disco 300tdi. The standard ones are totally **** despite looking reasonably good from the outside. I am already deaf in one ear and I don't wanna go deaf in my other.

Any recommendations for speakers? I want something that will fit nicely and offer decent sound quality.

Cheers

All the standard 100mm loudspeaker that you see on the Halfords display wall will fit, it's only when you get into the 'power' ones with their larger magnets that you will have to start modifing the door metal and panels to enable them to fit.
Just go and listen to them and make your own choice.

Can't see any on halfords website that are 100mm. Smallest is 13cm / 130mm

The do look good... it's a shame that they dont give the depth in the specs but then you can aways go onto Alpines site and get that, so unless you want to do some mods to the door you will require the same depth as your originals but then there will only be a small amount of door metal to trim or re-arrange ie. push back into the door void to increase the depth.

You are surposed to reuse your existing covers with custom speakers, so it all looks standard fitment.

And have you tried Ripspeed kit? my 200watt sub in a box is Ripspeed, three years on and still sounding great.

I got those Alpine ones in the end, but decided to just get 2 and put them in the back for now as one of the stock speakers had gone kaput.

What I will do is buy a more beefy pair of speakers and put them in the back (as there's more clearance in the back pillars) and put the ones I had just bought in the front. (I tested them and they only just fit - with the plastic door lining cut away)

So just for the record, if anyone wants to know what will easily fit in the front with no hassle, I recommend Alpine SXE-1025S.

Thanks for your advice. :)

Hey Rich,

Are the speakers well in the disco? Its all about the head unit aswell and what power is going to them not much point in getting big speakers if you havent got the head unit to power them. From the other thread being a 'boy racer' I know my speakers...!

I was thinking about getting a sealed box to put a Sub / Amp in to give green laning that edge!

I have a Sony MEX-BT3800U. Not the best for quality but it has bluetooth and USB support so that's what made me buy it, not bad for just over £100.

I have a £100ish head unit in mine too, but I have changed the rear speakers for some pioneer 6x9's and also put in a couple of crossovers to enable me to mount 2 little dome tweeters on my dash at the bottom of the pillars. The front door speakers are just the standard ones, and work ok with the system – no need to upgrade them in my opinion.

Sound is not too bad, still need to get some base in - not a 'boom boom boy racer type" but just to fill the spectrum if you know what I mean, so I am working on my sub box in the boot (the standard original fit one - as I need space in the boot). So far I have mounted an amp on the back door, and just need to get a couple of subs to fit in the standard box - (any recommendations?), then run a positive wire from my aux battery to power the amp then all should be ok.

Just having problems with my ABS at present that has diverted funds

Rich, you can fit 5" speakers in the back with very little fettling. I did this with mine and replaced the old front speakers with some 4" fli that were on offer at halfords at the time.

If you are worried about protecting the alpines is there a way to fit the existing covers over the new speakers?

They usually have the odd set of 4" speakers in store but the better deals come from the web site.
