Hello, im new to this forum stuff, so please stay with me.

Im 18 and own a Landrover 90 (2.5 Petrol, C-Reg), but after travelling back from Norwich recently, ive had problems with it. The engine is now running very oddly, and when cold tries to cut out. I'll explain what happened... Coming back, slowed down into the slip road, as I slowed down engine started to sound like it was racing, then when I came to a stop, struggled to keep going. I turned in and pulled it over, when I stopped the engine cut out. I managed to get it home after phoning my dad, but had to thrash the guts out of it to pull away each time. I gave it to a freind for 2 weeks (he only had a look) and he's told me its a Carb problem (fuel). So I bought a carb service kit off ebay (32/34 DMTL Service kit) and dad helped me change it all, put it all back on, nothings changed, engine still runs lumpy and sounds like its gonna stall at any moment. Its frustrating us, as I dont have money to keep spending on it due to fuel costs. Need some help... any idea's???

Cheers, Lewis.

Hi Drowber,

I have a 2.5 diesel engine as opposed to the 2.5 petrol, but they are (I believe) a very similar block. What exactly did the carb service kit include? Did it have new jets? Did you try some carb cleaning solution or spray to try and clean the carb out? It could also be that one of the spark plugs has gone or is failing to spark. I know for a fact that if one cylinder has a weak spark or fails to spark completely, the engine will have no power, will sound rough and will be physically shaking like hell on tickover, if you manage to get it ticking over. The best thing to do is remove each spark plug at a time (keeping it connected to the HT lead), and then rest it against the body of the engine, with a big enough gap for the tip, or any other part of the actual plug to create a spark across to the engine (1 CM or so) and then have someone turn the engine over with the ignition key. You should see a bright blue / white spark that is very clear. If there is no spark, the spark is dull or the sparking sequence is random (ie. 101000101011 as opposed to 101010101010) that's the problem. The simplest thing to do is check that the HT wires are well and truly clamped onto the end of the spark plug, and properly connected at the distributer. A new spark plug might also work a treat.

If there are sparking problems but a new spark plug or HT wire adjustments don't fix them, then it could be down to the HT/ignition coil, but let us know how you get on with that.

Hope you get it sorted!

ignition coil could also break down under load, i.e. spark fine outta the block but when put in with compression not work.

Check also points, timing, (with a stroboscope) and fuel lift pump to ensure its not being starved of fuel. Changed your fuel filter recently?

Sorry I didnt reply very quickly, im greatfull you've helped. Its had us stumped... I'll try awnser all questions... Erm, electrically, its fine, we've checked all that, and its all good, although the leads could be changed and so could the dizzy, the fuel filter is fine, and so is the pump, the service kit didnt include jets, and actually had a different gasket to the one on the carb, but we modified it to make it fit... Cleaned the jets, and now the idle screw actually works, the engine doesnt shake as much, and isnt running as badly, but it still sounds rough... We have also altered the timing... that made it run slightly better... Um, i think thats it... I appreciate your help... there are many other problems the cars had since ive had it, so maybe you guys can share some knowledge lol :)

Cheers, Lewis

Yeah im sorry for not replying... I didnt mean to offend ya.

Yeah the new diaphrams are fitted, but that alone didnt make much difference, as the kit didnt come with jets. As soon as we cleaned them, the car ran slightly better, and certain things started to work, like the idle screw. I took it out last night for a drive, after dad had set it best he could, and it seams to be running alot better than it was, although, when the engine is cold, or has been off for a little while, when you start it again (assuming you can because it turns over so many times) it does sound rough, and like it will cut out/stall. Other than that, the rev's are fine now, coz it was affecting that aswell, and changing gear was like trying to get it in 5th at about 2000 rev's for every gear... Other than that problem, there is one other id like to ask about... When I reverse, either left hand down or right... I occasionly get a rather loud click/bang/clang whatever from the front axle of the car... sounds like its on the left hand side, and only does it when I reverse... Am I regretting getting this as my first car, at £1800 a year insurance? Definatly not lol...

Cheers again.

Thats insane for insurance - mine was £700 a year for my first year!

With it cold, have you checked the operation of the choke? With this not working it would make it run rough when cold.

The clunk could be a number of things, bushes, CV joints. Can you feel anything through the steering when you do it? Does it do it more if yo reverse faster?

Never regret buying a Landy, if nothing else its an experience! :)

Ha ha, yeah i dunno why its such high insurance, maybe they looked at me and thought "mug"... I dont regret it, its done so much since having it, its great! Erm, the clunking does really only happen when reversing fast... if u go nice n slow, it doesnt make the sound atall, and no i dnt get anything through the stearing... all steering joints are fine coz i bought all new ones :D

I'm thinking water in the fuel. Not familiar with this carb, but take the float bowl off carefully and have a look at the contents. If there is a bowl drain, so much the better, open it over a glass jar. Water, being more dense than petrol, will be at the bottom, and you should be able to see it rolling around as you tilt the bowl from side to side.

If it's there, you'll need to drain down the fuel tank to get rid of it. The fuel take-off is normally higher than the tank floor to stop dirt being sucked into the system - but there is a limit!

The reason that it causes this problem is that you're operating the engine with a thin layer of fuel. Not much demand - no problem. Lots of demand and you start to suck water until the fuel pump does it's job. Sadly, the water stays at the bottom, and never gets pumped out.

Ok clever landrover people... I have another problem... While out last night sat outside a tesco express, i stupidly listened to my mate and revved it... the pedal stuck, and the engine screamed... when i got the pedal unstuck, there is a loud clicking noise from the engine... gets louder and faster with the accelorator... i have lost power... doesnt feel right... pulls away slower, and doesnt get up to speed as qwick... what have i done???? Im such an idiot... sounds like the noise is coming from under the rocker thing... PLEASE HELP ME.. halfords do not pay me enough for big problems... :(

COME ON!!! Allready sorted... Im lucky. Took the rocker off and all it was, was a nut off the top of the spring things... and the thing (sorry I dont know the name) was rattling about. Luckily the nut didnt drop down any holes and get chewed up... :D Otherwise things could have got nasty... The Landy lives on!!! What will break next however...

Yeah all sorted... Im just after stuff for it now... Like, where can I get some off road tyres? Or where is best to go? Id like a decent jack... And can you get interior lights for them? Um... A black rubber block is missing from one side? underneath... dont know what it does.. Do i need another? And im sick of having dull lights... Conversions? Cheers...

AJS 4x4 in the south east are good

Id like a decent jack...

Hi-lift for off road usage, for working on the car a good trolley jack - halfords etc. Get axle stands with it.

And can you get interior lights for them?

Isn't there one with it?

Um... A black rubber block is missing from one side? underneath... dont know what it does.. Do i need another?

Sounds like the bump stop - stops the axle hitting the chassis under big articulation. Technically its prohibitable, so you should replace it.

And im sick of having dull lights... Conversions?

LOTS of spotlights! Of a crystal halogen conversion, does make a fair difference.

Cheers...

Boydy

Thankyou! Yeah it didnt have an interior light... And I found a block on ebay... Thanks again!
